Now, I know that him and SuperBOY were friends (Best friends?), but that was before he became Superman, right? Did him and Clark ever have any encounters? What was with Mark Waid saying that they were friends in Smallville? In the Byrne run, Lex was not friends with Superman or Clark at all. If they did meet, can someone please give me issues when this happened? Thanks.

It is often said in the texts that Luthor and Superboy were good friends, though we did not see much of that. In fact, only a handful of pre-Crisis comics show scenes from Lex's life before he lost his hair.

In Jerry Siegel's "How Luthor Met Superboy," Lex was described in narration as "a recent newcomer" to Smallville. They met when Luthor saved Superboy from a kryptonite meteor. Luthor revealed he was a great admirer of Superboy's and that he was working hard to become a scientist so he could become famous like Superboy. As a way of thanking Lex for saving his life, Superboy built Luthor a laboratory, and the seeds of a friendship were planted. However, the accident that caused Luthor's hair loss happened, according to narration of that issue, within weeks of their meeting.

Oddly, however, despite that very specific time-frame, later comics showed or told of Luthor living in Smallville much longer, with at least one even showing him there as a toddler. At least two of those -- SUPERBOY #125 and SUPERMAN #292 -- showed interactions between Clark Kent and Luthor. The depth of their friendship is hard to discern from these brief scenes, but they were familiar with each other as classmates, at the very least.
