Quote: ***WARNING!!! This post contains SPOILERS for THUNDERBOLTS #137!!! If you do not wish to be spoiled, please do not read any further!!! You have been warned!!!!Thunderbolts #137 http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.9926.PREVIEW~colon~_Thunderbolts_%23137 ![]() Awesome context cover. Quote: This was a decent standalone issue for a guest writer stepping in until the new writer takes over. I was particularily impressed with how much continuity was worked in to it, which can be a definate challenge with "filler" issues. This book included the secret T-Bolts conspiracy among Ghost, Paladin and Headsman, as well as picking up Luke Cage's betrayal of Osborn from NEW AVENGERS #49 (and even Luke's role in sending Osborn to prison back in THE PULSE). That definately helped make the story feel like it mattered more than the typical standalone filler.'Decent' seems an apt descript for this one. To me it didnt even have a filler feel to it. If O'Grady is smart he is actaully walking off the team at the end since it follows Norman clearly believes(knows) he is a traitor. Youre right about the continuity attention being impressive too. Quote: Although the guest stars were the prominent heroes of the story, all of the T-Bolts got to have a bit of spotlight...except for Yelena, who was absent. But that's not at all surprising since this issue was originally solicited to come out *before* the issue where Yelena is revealed--they couldn't risk giving away plot twists depending on when this book shipped. Yelena's absence can be explained away in-story easily enough by saying she was recovering from her stasis and was not yet cleared for duty.If she is even removed from the tube yet... Quote: The team was quite effective in taking out Iron Fist... And Luke for that matter. [http://www.comicboards.com/app/show.php?msg=comicbattles-2009102612332261] This kinda mocks the Capekillers, post-CW Tbolts, HAMMER agents, TBolts, cops, etc inepptitude to date for rounding up SHRA fugitives for plot device reasons alone. Quote: and it was interesting to note that Ghost orchestrated that mission. I know Osborn decided to replace Scourge as team leader--I guess he's having Ghost fill in until Yelena is ready to take over? It is odd to think of him in any kind of leadership capacity though, given what an odd, paranoid loner he tends to be. Cant get enough Ghost these days. Quote: I could have done without Ant-Man's little bit about the reality tv show. I don't mind pop culture references (although they can date a story if you re-read them years later) but when you are having to change the names of the actual people for legal reasons, I find it throws me out of the story a bit. It was a decent enough character moment for Eric (and Mister X, in how he reacted to it), but I found the details of it a bit distracting.Thought it was alright save for the painful dialogue of his. He sounded waaay to suddenly surfer dude-ish in his mannerisms. Quote: Eric's attempt to bond with mind-controlled Danny was another good character moment that really made me feel sad for him. Not only is he in over his head with the T-Bolts and their missions, but he doesn't really have any friends anymore. The closest he has is Paladin, and they aren't all that close as of yet.Cant get enough Ant-Man these days but wont mind if he's off the team now for logic reasons. Dont expect this since Mr Parker probably has BIG plans for his Ant-Man. Hopefully at least, Norman specifically (and cliche-ly) lets him live back with the team fully knowing Eric's irredeemable loyalties have flipped. Quote: Speaking of Paladin--give this guy some respect already!!!! Yeah! Been wanting this since he joined! Quote: He is a super-strong professional mercenary who has an international reputation, has worked alongside Captain America, the Wild Pack, etc. He should not be running away from Cage screaming because a single shot from his stun gun failed to knock him out. The Paladin I know would have shot him again--and again--until it finally took full effect, while using his acrobatic skills to dodge out of Cage's way gracefully. I'm not sure what has happened to the guy since he's joined the T-Bolts, but he is either relegated to the background or is showing a complete lack of the skills, strength and expertise that make him who he is. Enough already. All true. Quote: Ant-Man sneaking into Luke's body in his food--interesting plan. He didn't think that one through very well though...as we saw when he finally found his "exit" at the end of the issue (and thanks ever so much Marvel, for that gross moment Ditt Quote: On that subject, I'm not entirely sure I buy Luke being immune to Ant-Man damaging him from the inside. Sure, he has his invulnerable skin--but does that *really* extend to the internal organs *beneath* his skin? Shrunken foes have managed to do damage inside the bodies of stronger and more invulnerable bodies than Luke's. I suppose he may have a unique superhuman physiology that IS protected on the inside...but, by definition, his "steel hard skin" should not be any defense against an opponent *inside* his body. Agreed. Quote: I liked the fact that we once again got to see that Mister X's telepathy doesn't always make him invincible--Luke's brain scramble meant that X couldn't read his moves. Mister X is annoyingly cocky, and I enjoy seeing him taken down a peg now and then...and I think it is important to establish that there *are* limits to his abilities, otherwise it makes him too invincible.Appreciate the efforts in this vein. But they should explore this power more and show unique limitations. While reading both minds was a neat olde-Brave&Bold-like escape idea from that 'trap'(ie danger) it has to be taken with a grain of salt. Is his power omni-directional? Does he always trip up if attacked by more than one guy? And if he can read minds - did he already know O'Grady was the traitor among other things he should (or is it should not) know? Quote: Was Paladin really coming down to get "revenge" on Luke? I doubt it. That would be really out of character for him. I think he was preparing to free Luke himself, but Ghost beat him to it...and Paladin ended up being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It mightve been neat for an H4H reference between them. It will be interesting to see Paladins reminiscing in narration box or though balloon if he ever returns to being a true hero or Hero for Hire (plug Quote: The DNA lasers--neat weapon! That would make for a very deadl security system.Until a scene calls for a wet paper bag Tower defense. Quote: Headsman's "dirty couble crosser" joke actually was kinda clever, and it was an interesting moment of humour from him, since he isn't really known for his quips. Missed that. Have to go back. BTW, also missed the significance of the letters of Luke's cap. Did catch the return of Luke's olde signature yellow color scheme which was nice nostalgia. Quote: Osborn planning to use his forced "recruits" to kill and replace existing T-Bolts. That is an interesting bit. We already knew that Osborn considered at least some of the group expendable (he tried to kill off Headsman once already), but this is taking it to a new extreme. Was he dissatisfied with the group's performance and wanted to weed out some dead weight? Or did he consider mind-controlled agents to be more reliable and loyal (and less of a risk to exposing his black ops) than people with free will and their own agendas? Along that line--does he already realize (or at least suspect) that some of the team is already working against him? If so, the guys will need to take extra care to watch their backs.Hate this aspect of DR. Norman keeps saying he wants to kill but hasnt hit a handbook character yet. Fully expect Swordsman to pop up too - given readers were denied a corpse to. Plus this contradicts his repeated, (presumably) successful, GreenGoblin-crazy, orders to kill Willy Nilly no-name citizens with STILL no reprecussions. He cant be THAT good at sooo many cover-ups, can he? C'mon Ben Urich get off your duff! One can imagine A LOT of people talked to Rand, besides Natalie, in the last 3 hours. Quote: Did Osborn seriously expect anyone to fall for his "I know who did it. Come forth now and I won't kill you" line? If Osborn knew who had read the file and helped the heroes, he wouldn't be bothering with the lecture in the first place--he'd make an example of him on the spot. Quote: All in all, this was a decent read, and I would mind seeing Remender do some more work with the T-Bolts at some point if they need another fill-in issue or something. In the meantime, I am looking forward to Parker's debut next issue!Even if the poser cover looks commonly generic the solicit shows fun potential. http://marvel.com/catalog/?id=13299 ![]() | |||||||
