I guess I meant it a bit differently. I meant that a writer can take a book, any book, in a different direction. If it is good or bad is another matter altogether.

I will concede that the overall editorial staff etc. also has a role in that and can mess with things too.

I was more thinking about a different writer being able to shift all sort of things. That seems fairly safe to say in many cases. Not too many anymore want to pick up exactly where the last guy left off. Which is a problem too.
