I'll say that Thor should be able to use both his ability to manipulate the wind and the lightning itself to fly. Now, it's estimated that lightning travels approximately 250,000 miles per hour or more. This means that it's possible for someone like Thor to travel from Earth to the Moon much faster than any space vehicle that men has created thus far. If Thor can generate such force and could travel at such speed- think of the possibilities.

Now, the fact that Thor could manipulate and harness lightning at such scale enough to demolish part of the Asgardian Bridge with one blow- he could virtually destroy any conventional barrier known to men. If an Electric Chair could kill any man with low voltage comparatively speaking- imagine such incredinle voltage with the strength of Thor behind it.. I think that you're right in that Thor does need more experience using his powers.
