    it might have been prior to his final confrontation with Strange, since Strange is still doing his veterinarian stint during the Death of Thor storyline apparently. Also, in the Strange comic Loki in the end admitted to having faked the Tournament and the presence of the Vishianti himself to take the role by convincing Strange to step down, after he uses the title to "bring back the Magic on Earth" he lets Strange take it again.

    He was Sorceror Supreme only because he tricked Strange into stepping down, used it to position power on earth for future events, then stepped down; probably he could have used the leverage before to hide Frigga somewhere.

Why would Loki be interested in being Sorcerer Supreme in the first place? Loki should have just as much knowledge or more than Stephen about artifacts of power in the universe because he's been around so much longer. Earth is just one dimension.

since the Infinity Countdown began, he has strated to act in preparation for something very big, to the point he dabbled with Infinity gems and Celestials

the role had magical perks he was after, and he felt he needed to push Strange into getting back on track;

since Magic on earth had been weakened with the "death of Magic" storyark, he felt Strange was being a weak SS

he wanted to put things in position for the infinity new event, so he brought the dragon lines of magic on earth back at full capacity

when he did so though he had to connect with Zelma, and she could see in his head what he did to get the title

he knows things of the future. The War of Realms, the Hell on Earth (the next Strange arc); he alludes at the new gathering of the infinity stones. And he knows of the oncoming Final Host.
