What i have read of the Golden-Age Wonder Woman does tend to be seeped in this sort of strangeness and occasional extreme 'games', but this example in particular takes the notorious interests of William Marston to another level of disturbing...

The bizarreness and obvious apparent insanity of Paradise Island aside though and what I do appreciate about the scene is what might not even have been intended, chiefly the effort to show how strange such a foreign culture might be to our rational western sensibilities and how the traditions of a grecian civilisation might have evolved over three thousand years of isolation. The beliefs and social pursuits of a people who have lived in luxury and must invest in practices that will prevent boredom and stagnation are things that deserve to be explored. So while too extreme even by the days standards the idea behind the scene posted does have earned merit. It is the presentation that is so disturbing, not the acts themselves...

That's a kind spin to it.
