That makes no sense to me. I even enjoyed the battlefield scenes but having the climax be yet another sfx-filled otp fight scene made it tedious for me.

I have mixed feelings about the movie but, even though it was not totally clear, I had a different understanding of the conclusion of the fight vs Ares.

In my opinion, she destroyed the Last of the Olympians with the Thunderbolt.

If I correctly understood the movie, Ares stole the Thunderbolt from Zeus and used it to defeat his father.

Before Zeus died, he gave to Diana, his daughter, the power to counteract the Thunderbolt and destroy Ares, its former user, with it. In the movie, her bracelets work like some kind of lightning rod.

The way I see it, she had no other choice but to embrace her destiny as "godkiller" and her legacy as the last of the Greco-Roman goddesses on Earth when she killed her brother.
