Didn't like last issue Jean Grey story at all. So, didn't even post here about it - nobody else did either. It was pretty good as a Namor tale, though. This issue was the same. Same sloppy direction, same messy characterization, and same leary future for the title. The art was pretty good, though. Having a BIG NAME guest star again is fun but also reminds me how boringly empty the non-existant dedicated supporting cast is.

For myself, one of the genuine dissapointments of the last four months has been this title, and there are several other great underperformers out there too to be fair. Being rather fond of the character and her potential I wanted this supposed ongoing series to be good, to be something that ground the character into an everyday life and a recognisable world, what we get instead of any of that is an immediate nonsensical 'quest' of a story that doesn't move Jean in any such earthly direction and lazily opts to immediately revisit the worst of the baggage of the original adult Jean Grey. All done in a way that, not surprisingly given this is a Pheonix 'plot', offers nothing whatsoever new, or fresh, or even of the remotest of interest to new or old reader alike. We have seen it all before, a Phoenix story by now feels more like Groundhog day than some worthwhile event in itself... we know the riff by heart at this stage.

Accessibility in a new title matters. So does appeal. Instead of investing these all-important debut issues in setting up a day-to-day life for Ms Grey that is outside the X-Men fishbowl, and something that offers the required fresh territory both she and her new series require, choices have been made that virtually guarantee that this now will be another X-Men mini-series, and not the potential breakout title that Jean Grey as a character is certainly capable of producing for the franchise. Bereft of even a shred of originality or thoughtfulness in its pages Jean Grey lies stillborn as a title, doomed to poor fate simply due to the profound lack of any care or attention put into making its debut and its title character appeal to an audience...

She's just a waste of a character. People want Jean but they don't want the real Jean with baggage. They want this cookie cutter mockery of Jean who rides on the coattails of the real Jean. And Jean's had that before Maddie, Rachel, Hope...all wanting to devalue the real Jean and make her less unique.

Just bring back the real Jean. I'm sick of having her back but not having her back. There is obviously some need for the character or this title wouldn't exist...so let's get rid of this crappy teen version and get the real Jean back. And with Cyclops AND Wolverine currently dead it's the perfect time to bring her back without those idiots always weighing her down.
