So, it was probably really him, just being used as a puppet for Jean's benefit, like all of the other poor souls in the fake reality were. As Jean was saying, "We're better off dead." Better off at peace.

You'll also note from last issue that whenever Jean wasn't looking in that fake reality, it turned to a fiery apocalypse. It was an illusion for Jean's benefit, but with real repercussions for the others. When Tag/Brian Cruz is delivering newspapers, Jean sees a nice suburbia paradise, but when he passes her, he bursts into flames. The way I see it is all of these souls are being tortured, except when it makes Jean feel good.

That is horrifying. The Phoenix is torturing all these souls?

That's my take away. The Phoenix had set up this fake reality to make Jean feel good and populated it with real dead souls. These souls seem to be living fairly comfortable lives, until Jean's back is turned, then they burst into flame... until they're needed for Jean again. At the end, Jean scolds The Phoenix for this and tells it to go away, once and for all.

Also - since I can't figure this out from what you guys are saying to each other - Why (at least in her mind) has Jean returned?

I'm not really sure. She even says, "We were better off dead" (numerous times). That's why I said in my first post that if she really feels that way, then why is she living? Go be dead, if it makes you happy, Jean. There's no real reason for her being alive.

I get why the Phoenix was doing this, even if it's not how the Phoenix has been in the past. This Phoenix wanted to keep resurrecting Jean like it helped her the first time. There's codependent relationship between them. But Jean has now had enough. Okay. So die, Jean. What's stopping you?
