Frankly, Morrison's version made a lot more sense to me considering how Emma began. Lobdell's Emma was way too goody two-shoes. For a while, I thought part of Jean got stuck in Emma when Jean almost died saving her.

And I still haven't completely abandoned that thought. \:P

I may be dreaming this, but I could swear there was at least a hint that at some point when Jean went away for some reason (something Phoenix-related I think) she did something to Scott telepathically to nudge him toward a romance with Emma. Am I dreaming or did this actually happen?

No. That happened at the end of Morrison's run. Jean, from the White Hot Room, told Scott to "Live" by sucking Emma's face on Jean's grave.

Otherwise, without Jean's nudge, there was an alt-future where Scott permanently quit being an X-Man, because he couldn't live without Jean, leaving Beast to run the school. Beast turned to drugs (Kick, which was Sublime in aerisol form), and the school went to crap. And that's how we got the "Here Comes Tomorrow" future, where Sublime ruined the world.
