I just found a site from May 2015 with a survey of the most popular 100 Avengers. Pretty disapointed that a lot of these are guys I don't even consider to be Avengers (a Doombot included), but also happy D-man nearly made the midway point. I wonder who didn't make the cut. Here are the top seven, with two surprises:

7 Black Panther
6 Black Widow
5 Hawkeye
4 Ironman
3 Thor
2 Captain Marvel
1 Captain America

I had no idea BP and CM were that popular, beating Wolverine, Spiderman, Hulk, Vision, Scarlet Witch, etc, etc. Would this be a team worth seeing? It's not likely we will, unless we can swap in the new Cap and Thor, but I think that would be a good team too.

I wouldn't agree with Black Panther being in the top 10, his Avengers membership is very sporadic and I don't see him as being more popular in the team that Scarlet Witch and The Beast for example. The Beast had a relatively short time on the team compared others but to my mind he was more popular and successful therein than the Panther.
The same applies to Captain Marvel, who i assume is Monica Rambeu here, she had a relatively short time with the team, but unlike others made a great impression and is fondly remembered.

So for a top 10 the big three are automatically in - Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. After that it is quite fluid and fully open to interpretation, but I would hold up Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, The Vision, Luke Cage, Black Widow and The Wasp as likely to be the favourites, and after that the likes of The Beast, Ms. Marvel/Carol Danvers, Black Knight, Captain Marvel/Monica, and Hercules.
As I say though a lot of it will be down to personal favourites rather than actual contributions to the team...

Gilgamesh was number 8 right?

Do you have a link to the survey? I'd be interested to learn about their polling data. Personally I think the data is skewed. Carol is popular, but there's no way she would poll above Iron Man or Thor, both of whom have had their own movie franchises.

Mind you, in May 2015 we had a female Thor and an inverted Iron Man, so who knows? The timing may also play into why Black Panther scored so high. He had some great moments in Hickman's Avengers. His feud with Namor (who I hate) was a high-point.

I found this on a site called comicsalliance.com. You can find it if you search for Nightmask there as I found the survey results at the bottom of an article about the new Starbrand and Nightmask series. I had a lot of trouble navigating this site as my iPad slowed to a stop. Might work for you, I guess.

The slowness of it led to me not lingering long enough to see who got polled for this. Good luck.

Thanks. Found the poll here, for those interested:

Sounds like they just polled their readership, so there is a strong possibility of fanboys skewing the results.

And Reverend - the Forgotten One wasn't forgotten. He got 98th place.

I'm a big Carol fan, but I just can't fathom her ranking 2nd.

But I'll take it! \:\)

Now bring on her movie!

But Rita Jacket, Mantis and Lionheart weren't included, which I am also a little sad about.

The 7 most popular characters who have been Avengers according to this 2011 poll (http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/09/01/2011-top-100-dc-and-marvel-comic-book-characters-master-list/) of CBR readers are:

1. Spider-Man
2. Captain America
3. Thor
4. Wolverine
5. Hulk
6. Daredevil
7. Iron Man

But if you restrict the list to Avengers who have been on the team for very long periods of time or are founding members, then it'd be:

1. Captain America
2. Thor
3. Hulk
4. Iron Man
5. Hawkeye
6. Beast
7. She-Hulk

The Beast might be iffy in this regard, so if you remove him, then Carol Danvers moves into 7th place.

The 2015 version of the poll is going on right now here if you want to vote:

I suspect that the reason Wolverine and Spider-man didn't score higher on the list is because a lot of people didn't like them as Avengers. If the question had been who are your favorite superheroes, both Wolverine and Spider-man would make the top 10. I also suspect that the survey was predominantly given to twenty-somethings or younger. That's the only reason Black Widow would make the top 10.
