It was created strictly for copyright purposes. Not exactly the most noble reason for changing a classic costume. The simple black bat is most effective.

You know, I've always heard that, too... that the reason they added the oval was for marketing and copyright purposes.

The part about it that I like is that they were able to explain it in "story" terms... I believe it was in Dark Knight Returns (I could be mistaken) where they actually mention that Bruce added the yellow oval around the bat as "a target" for anyone who would be shooting at him, provide them an area (other than the head or limbs) that was well-protected with body armor.

Rather than just change the costume for merchandising and copyright... there was a logical reason in the storyline.

You only see it on merchendising, general merchendising because of the copyright. It's only absent when it is an image taken from a comic, a cartoon or from a film. Otherwise your standard Batman that's found on a thing of band-aids will have the oval. A t-shirt of "Justice" will feature Batman by Alex Ross, but it will not have the oval.

The yellow oval looked so cool though...and even spooky when the rest of Batman was dark, with the oval gleaming like a beacon in the night.

Very cool-looking.

The yellow oval was around long before DKR. And Frank Miller wanted to remove the oval for the series, but DC said no. During the second issue, the chest emblem is slashed by the Mutant leader, and when Miller put Batman into a fresh costume, he left the oval out and never put it back. The "target" was the bat iself, not the bright coloring behind it.

DC wanted to copyright the bat emblem for their character, but a judge ruled that a simple bat symbol wasn't specific enough to "own." So DC stylized the whole thing with the yellow oval.
