I sadly have canceled my subscription of The Black Panther (My very favorite marvel character). I'm afraid the whole retcon approach didnt appeal to me. I feel that The Black Panther had a very proud history that I had grown up reading, and I didnt appreciate the break in continuity. I read all the Jungle Action issues and all the Christoper Priest issues as well as his different stints with the Avengers. While there is credence that the Priest issues had flaws (after all, Tchalla was hardly in his own comic and Priest was too fond of doing the bait and switch which left his own readers in the dark.)he certainly gave the Panther a mystique and sense of having "come into his own" that was missing before, while at the same time performing an homage to the rich history of the character. I appreciated that he also spent some time developing "the panther cult", because I always thought the character should have a touch of Shamanisim to contrast/balance out the Super Science aspect of his personal reality. Tchalla with his bald head, and shades was just as mysterious and fascinating as his masked avatar. You could tell that he had really grown and been shaped by his past. But currently I find his world to be trendy and the stories empty. Pretending that the last 41 years of his exploits never happened or maybe just some of it happened is insulting. I'm afraid I also don't like that he has to drag an X-Man with him into ever story, now that he has married Storm.(What a dumb idea!) If I wanted to see Ororo I'd buy a mutant title. But apparently at Marvel you have to read the X-men no matter what title you buy. In my estimation she ruins the tone of every issue and takes away from the main character: The Black Panther. The Black Panther is brilliant loner, just like the animal he is named for. But now he has access to the powers of wind and thunder vis a vis his wife. Its almost like he has all new super powers. I liked him better as a genius inventor/scientist, A philosopher-king and Shamanic Avatar of his tribe. So I guess I'll just partake of the Sacred Herb and wait in the Pavillion of the Panther God for the next incarnation of........ The Black Panther!
