The United States Of Captain America 004

Sigh. Cap is turning into Batman in that he has a persona on his team book of Mighty Avengers and a separate one for his own street level title adventures like this one. Sure, it's often peeving reading Batman copying Iron Man by cranking out deus ex Battechina du jour but maybe Cap should be copying off Batman more by prepping and planning more before always purposely rushing headlong into crazy-level danger missions - like he does here. C'mon, at least use a cell phone to it's potential - if not an Identicard, Cap, you're Super Soldier system should be able to handle it. Then there's the Cap who never wanted to have SUPERPOWERED young credible heroes without having gone through Avengers Academy training. Not to mention it's against Kamala's Law and C.R.A.D.L.E. would hunt down such public heroes. And yet, here, he is shockingly fine with NORMALPOWERLESS street-level teen "heroes" tagging along with him against ruthless heroes like Superior Schmidt, Speed Demon, and the crazy possibility of Hate-Monger.

Batman may not mind umpteen "Robins" running 'round. But this codename copying Cap continues the disgusting trend that serves to diminish the brand and confuse readers. Plus, we get Steve's renewed(?) outdated iwannasay "guilt" over debatably stealing the superhero mantle from the Native Americans. Like he still doesn't consider himself truly American or properly dedicated to the country he loves? Really?

The Bucky/Falcon banter was to corny for my tastes. Finding Walker drunk and unannounced(read:unfootnoted) at the bar was disagreeable way to revisit his character.

On the plus side the use of the four supervillains were interesting enough and (somewhat) balanced out the ineptitude of the four Caps. Heck, it even earned them their trope-y getaway.

nb. And there's another gimmick themed backup featuring yet another Captain Wannabe which was also perfectly fine -- but for a Younger Reader Market or someone in need of an Archie's Digest fix.

Was this Cap doing Cap best?
