Captain Carter 001 (2022)

That Disney+ WHAT IF cartoon debuting alt-Captain Carter was fantastic and inspiring - and catalyst to cash in on a comic book version. By comparison this comic book premiere was... not. It felt bogged down with mimicking -an air of- backstory details of the first (reimagined) CAP Movie (ending) which was also great and memorable. Then this #1 spent half the pages deliberately mansplaining the banal political debate if Peggy (and her title) would be treated as more American or British superhero property. Peggy still isn't even sure if she wants to star as a hero - which is sort of self defeatist when it comes to self-promotion. The brief action sequence of deflecting a rocket and grabbing a Hydra Nobody by the collar was... too brief. The most interesting part of the book was the simple 616-adjacent namedroppings (eg. Betsy Braddock, Fantastic FIVE, S.T.R.I.K.E.) which includes that very neat opening splash page newsclippings. So, Recyclable Hydra is the opening antagonist? Yawn. PM Williams and Harley? Meh. Have yet to appreciate the leaking saturation of (reimagined) alt-Spider-Gwen into the 616 reality, so hopefully, the same peeves won't fall on this aped franchise. Maybe #2 will turn things around -at least some- and readers won't discount alt-Peg?
