Basically, Loki is stuck in Asgard (due to decree by the Big Daddy O) while Thor is allowed to continue loafing on Earth. So Loki (understandably) gets upset and decides to trick a junior Sorcerer in Dr. Strange (who is now learning to "master" levitation) into stealing Thor's hammer thus making Odin's favored son powerless. Loki can only send his spirit form to Earth to talk to Strange hence he can only use some of his powers while Strange is so green he looks as if he only just picked up a book of spells for the first time. Anyhow, Strange realises Loki's trickery and a battle royal ensues between the two.

I've never seen this in color, so thanks!

This is a very interesting battle from a historical viewpoint and shows a lot about how far Strange has come.

Very true. Since you seem to be a "library" of sorts \:\-\) when it comes to older (and newer) comics, you wouldn't happen to have any scans of their more recent battles ?
If you discount the very indirect evidence in "Thor, The Reigning" where Loki somehow got hold of Strange's cloak, has there ever been any indisputable evidence on who is the most powerful ?

It seems odd but no. They have very rarely even met! Strange has never been to Asgard as far as i'm aware... i'm sure there's a story in there... *rhe*
So far as i'm aware: they next 'met' in 1973 with the Avengers/Defenders clash i've been posting from, Loki is blind after a fight with Thor and Dormammu rescues him reducing him to the role of a servant more or less... but Loki is still scheming and Dormammu has engineered the fight between the two teams!
The teams arrive to confront Dormammu with Loki at his side but there is no acknowledment of Loki's prescence really and he doesn't do much as the fight is Dormammu's...

I think the next meeting is in the 'Heroes Return' mini in the 90s where Loki appears in astral form and taunts Strange, just taunts here, he wants to know what Strange knows and is trying to manipulate him when he is spirited away I think...

As a sidenote Strange battles Enchantress & a Pseudo Executioner cum Bloodaxe in the early 90s and notes that while he could probobly "deal with either one handily" two of them are too much, he also makes an interesting comment about the Asgardians power being Teutonic and backed by centuries of worshippers or words to that effect. I shall have to post this one sometime perhaps. \:\-\|

So basically Loki, Asgard & Strange don't mix... which is a bit odd really.

I think the whole Strange vs Loki thing is like two boxers circling each other sizing each other up. They both respect each other but I feel Loki under estimates Strange while Strange has a very healthy respect for Loki.

Very good assesment.

It's hard to gauge how they shape up today, Strange gets power from all manner of sources - some comes from his own training, some from Talismans and the rest is borrowed from differing deities. But what makes him dangerous is his skill and tactical ability to fight, her is a man who has repeatedly outmaneuvored Dormammu and major Elder Gods and demons - Loki has to respect and be wary of such an opponent.

I always wondered if they had a use besides a fashion statement. >:-D

Well Strange did go to Asgard along with Thanos, Surfer and the Infinity Watch during the Blood & Thunder Saga But Loki (strangely enough) didn't have any part in that story.
