Just wondering if any of you have been following the latest Supes storyline, where he is shown a Future that involved him being killed off fighting, but main thing that interested me was that it was shown that he was able to get powered up by absorbing energies from heat/pressure/rocks within the Core of the earth itself!(Quick story/villian used nanites to go into his body to try to kill him off, and Supes is also hurled through Earth itself, and remains lodged in its core for awhile, but than escapes back to surface, using the energies of molten core lava/rocks/heat/pressure to repower him back up to a degree!)

Is this an example of showing us that Supes can use other means to absorb power/energies, not just the Sun, or was this just bad example?

His precise method of empowerment is the sun... what exact energies is unclear but It's not as if he's heat powered or even an energy leech who can tap into any old ambient energies... while it has been shown he can absorb differing radiation wavelenghts via the sun (just after his ressurection when his powers went out of control) it is not his standard means of getting power... we know that if he's out of range of a star while in deep space he will power down to the point of being human - he can't absorb energy out there in the same way as say the silver surfer can.

This is an elseworld's story, so it mya not hold water for anyone, but Superman was the adopted son of Darkseid in this story. DS crafted a suit of armor that allowed Kal to absorb energy directly from the ceneter of Apocolips. Also, in WW3, Superman absorbed the energy that powere Maggedon if i remember correctly.

Well, Mr. M. You said it in one word. Standard. Superman's Standard means of getting power is by absorbing sun radiation or light, but there has been nothing that has stated that he can not absorb or use other forms of energy in order to power himself. As i stated below, he did absorb Meggadon's "anti-sun" energy or whatever it was called, and used it as a means to power himself.

In that case maybe the Hulk can absord Solar or Cosmic energy instead of Gamma Rays? *rhe*

Is Superman therefore the Silver Surfer using the logic of this thread? If so why is he shown as losing power away from stars or under different color ones?
It has been stated and shown that it is the particular energy given by being close to yellow stars that powers superman, whether it's a mixture of Radiations or just one particular wavelength doesn't really matter - Sunlight is his power source.

This is nearly as odd a suggestion as the one posted here a while back that Superman could be recharged via the output of Lightbulbs!!!

No no. I am saying that based on the fcat that I have seen Superman absorb energy that was not yellow sunlight, there is no way of saying that he cannot or is not able to absorb other forms of energy, since he has done so. Have you ever seen Hulk absorb anything other than Gamma Rays that helped to heal or strengthen him? Superman was inside of Magedon and apparently was under it's influence, but still managed to absorb all of the energy that was that "anti-solar energy". This being the case, I am simply saying that, if he has done it once, there is no way to discount that he may be able to do it again.

Perhaps due to the very nature of his powers... Its not so much that the Solar energies of the Sun are his power source, but that his body uses that form of energy as his "food", and his body transforms yellow Solar energy into a digestable source of energy for his body to consume?

Maybe like Galactus to a small extent, as G has the Energies from Worlds converted to "food" source he can "digest" and use to power himself, perhaps the Sun is the source/energy that has the best way for his body to process it and conver tit into his 'food"?

> It has been stated and shown that it is the particular energy given by being close to yellow stars that powers superman, whether it's a mixture of Radiations or just one particular wavelength doesn't really matter - Sunlight is his power source.
Sunlight is the most efficient energy source that his body will use to convert to "food", but doesn't the very facts that he could absorb meggaddon, and use the heat energies from lava/Rock/Thermal core of Earth suggest that he can use other types of energy to convert and use for food, just that yellow radiant enrgy is the most efficient?
And in the PC days, it was shown that he could use Orange/Blue/White solar energies as "food" to power him up, just that unable to use Red Solar energies for such!

Thanks to RC on Superman Message Board for these examples of Supes absorbing energies..
Just might be the DC SS!(Doesn't Glads in Marvel absorb solar and other "ambbient" cosmic energies too?)

"Absorbed:
Anti-Sunlight: JLA World War Three
Chronal Energy: Time and Time Again
Solar and "Cosmic Energies": Vs. Rampage
Magnetism: Adventures in the DCU #6
Electricity: Superman Endgame (aka Y2K -- turned him into Energy Superman)
"Solar and other energies faster than ever before": Power Crisis

So he doesn't have to worry about ever powering down when out of sunlight anymore? Just find the nearest alternate energy source...

That is the implication is it not?

Hes already about as powerful as it gets, and yet the fans crave more!!!!

His powers have always been powered by the sun. end of!

Superman could draw solar energy from sources other than the sun, such as artificial lights. It looks like DC agrees with me.

DC would agree with anything that makes Superman more powerful.

("Superman more powerful"? Is that like saying, "Bigger than infinity"?)
