Subj: America is a Hybrid-Regime

America is a Hybrid-Regime.

First Past the Post voting, Gerrymandering, the Citizens United legalization of bribery, and corporate control over the news are the four pillars of the Hybrid-Regime.

First Past the Post voting prevents the rise of 3rd parties in response to corruption, because refusing to vote for the 2 parties in power elects your worst enemy. This prevents any 3rd party from reaching a critical mass. This means that corporations only need to corrupt two parties and that corruption becomes eternal, because those two parties can never collapse due to the public realizing how corrupt they are.

Gerrymandering allows politicians to pick their voters rather than voters picking their politicians. It also gradually results in districts, and sometimes states, becoming one-party. This means that corporations only needing to corrupt the leadership of one party. It also makes young politicians beholden to party leadership rather than the people, creating a Master/Apprentice relationship between old and young politicians rather like the Sith.

Citizens United legalizes bribery. Do I even need to elaborate on why this is anti-democratic?

Corporate control over the media allows the establishment to frame issues so that progressives sound insane, or simply starve progressives of coverage entirely. It also allows corporations to control the range of acceptable debate. Thus, they can encourage vigorous debate over purely social issues, while preventing debate over real changes to the political machinery design, or deep economic systemic change.

Even one of these things would create a deeply flawed democracy. The four in combination move America firmly into the Hybrid-Regime category.
