How do you pronounce “gif?” Hard-G, as in gift? Or soft-g, as in gem?

Like Gift without the 't' at the end

I use the hard G because that's how everyone I knew said it back when I became familiar with it, and because the G stands for Graphic which also has a hard G (Graphic Interchange Format).

However the story is that the guy who created the format pronounces it Jif.

Officially, it's "jif", with a soft-g, like the peanut butter. That's what the creator of the format said.

The P in JPEG stands for Photographic, but you don't pronounce that Jay-Feg.

With the hard g. I know the creator said the soft g or j sound. Although once it falls into common usage I think that often becomes correct or at least no longer incorrect.

I am not sure I have ever heard anyone pronounce it with the soft g sound.

I actually pronounce it with the soft g. I figure it’d cut down on confusion; figure it’s less likely that people would think of the peanut butter with soft g gif, and more likely they’d mishear hard g gif as “gift.”

My son when he was younger wouldn't say Foto but Pa-Hoto. So that is my answer to that.
