Subject: A Brief Visit to My Old Stomping Grounds... Posted Tue Jan 12, 2010 at 11:17:28 am EST (Viewed 31 times) | |

Hey, all -- I thought I'd drop by my old stomping grounds here for a bit of shilling (if the mods will indulge me ![]() I recently wrote and published a book about comic book fans. Kind of a who they are, why they act the way they do, that sort of thing. I've been itching to write it for the better part of a decade now, and I finally plunged ahead with it in 2009. I've tried to write it so that it's both intelligent and casual; if I did my job right, it should be both easily accessible and enlightening as well. It's based a lot on my own experiences as a fan, so there's actually quite a few references to the Fantastic Four throughout the book, including some bios of FF uberfans, JA Fludd and the late Gregg Allinson. I also use some Jack Kirby and George Perez FF art to help illustrate a couple of my points. And, for the coup de grâce, I managed to get long-time FF editor Tom Brevoort to write the foreword! (I still can't believe he agreed to do that!) The book is available in both paperback and hardcover here... http://stores.lulu.com/comicbookfanthropology ...but I'm also serializing the main bulk of the content for free on this site... http://www.ComicBookFanthropology.com So please feel free to stop by and read a few chapters. If you like what you read and buy a pulped wood copy for your bookshelf, so much the better! Thanks for your attention!

I saw you posted to the Prof the other day. I am glad to see your project is finished so I will have to check that out. I have to add I really miss your old site. Greg and J.A. had contributed some nice reviews and articles.

I still talk with JA fairly regularly and keep up with his sporadic blog postings... http://the-quantum-blog.blogspot.com/ I actually refer to Gregg in the book a few times. I dedicated it in part to him, and sent a comp copy to his parents.

Alive and kicking, as they say! ![]() Though I haven't really paid much heed to the FF since Civil War, I've remained active in fandom. I still write my "Incidental Iconography" column for The Jack Kirby Collector (in issue #54, due out next month, I tackle the subject of Stan 'The Man' Lee) and I continue blogging daily (http://kleefeldoncomics.blogspot.com). You can also frequently find me popping up around the comics blogosphere -- Comics Reporter, Journalista, Robot 6, etc. Though I don't have a Twitter account, I get mentioned/linked to through there fairly regularly too. Oh, there's that little book thing I mentioned before too! ![]() I've kept plenty busy in comicdom, even if it's not around these parts much!

Still sucks that it's gone Sean. None of the comicbook stores near me carry the Jack Kirby Reader. You already plugged your book once....

Thanks very much, Prof. That you bought a copy (and are still willing to recommend it to others!) is by far the highest compliment I've been paid about the book.
