Subj: The Flash "The Darkness and the Light Review *SPOILERS*

The episode opens in Earth-2, showing us how retro and primitive it is compared to Earth Prime and then comes the oxymoron where it’s technology may look ‘primitive’ but it’s actually highly advanced. Then the twist happens. Dr. Wells is a dad with a beautiful daughter. Not only that but Dr. Wells also created Zoom. There are depths to Earth-2 Dr. Wells I am already liking because on Earth Prime, Dr. Wells created the Flash. This is definately one of the themes running through this episode and it works.

Then in another twist, Earth-2 Linda Park is Dr. Light and a thief. I don’t know why the Flash writers feel the need to depart from the comics because Dr. Light is actually Kimiyo Hoshi and a scientist not a thief. There is a time to depart from the comics in order to make a lame character into a cool one for a live action series and there is also a time where it is not necessary. This is one of those times where it wasn’t necessary. Give me the real Dr. Light please because Linda Park is not her. And I was really hyped for this episode because Dr. Light was in it. And then she turns into a murderer, I don’t care if it was on accident. It was so they could give Linda Park something to do without actually thinking of a good reason for Kimiyo Hoshi to come to Earth Prime. What a disappointment...

And then the romance between Patty and Barry took an unexpected turn. Patty displays just how smart she is by deducing that Barry is blind. In most shows that I have seen, the love interest cannot deduce anything and she is written in a way where she’s clueless about the hero. But not Patty Spivot. The writers gave her some intelligence and I applaud them for doing that. We also get another look into Patty’s past and how she thinks fear holds us back. It’s a rare glimpse into her character and I hope to see more of it. This new stage in Barry’s relationship with Patty cannot last because sooner or later, Patty will find out that Barry is the Flash.

And now everyone knows Cisco is a metahuman and this is for the best. Secrets are not easy to keep, especially when it’s a secret that should have been told a long time ago. I can understand the reasons why Cisco must have been hesitant about telling everyone he was a metahuman but he should have told Team Flash a long time ago. I am not complaining, however, I think it creates interesting tension.

Overall, it wasn't too bad of an episode. We got to see Patty Spivot actually grow a little as a character because of her date with Barry AND deduce he was blind. We got to see a neat parallel between Earth Prime Dr. Wells and Earth-2 Dr. Wells, then Cisco being revealed as a Metahuman....

I feel like I want to say more about this episode but I cannot put it down into words. Perhaps that in of itself speaks volumes on how average this episode was. It wasn't the best of the season, but it easn't the worst of the season either. I suppose the huge disappointment with Dr. Light effected my view of this episode. It just wasn't the character I was hoping to see.

This episode gets a 3 out of 5 stars from me. It was pretty average and not an episode I'd care to watch again.

It's interesting that a hero/villain performs one amazing feat, or use a power they haven't used for 20+ years, and that automatically propels them to a high status despite scans and evidence to the contrary. I don't know what is worse, selective feat picking that has only been done once or twice 20, or more, years ago or ignoring evidence from scans or the lack thereof. We need to stop putting our favorite heroes/villains on pedestals and start putting them where they really belong. But it's evident that people never will because they would rather accuse others of cherry picking feats, when they don't, and being 'morally superior' when they aren't. I guess being honest and as fair as possible only opens one up to being the target of childish accusations and fault finding by those who insist on acting petty and childish. What happened to a good debate between two civil, mature, adults?
