Continuing my review of the volume and continuing the story of the stone tablet.
Here we finally learn the purpose of the stone tablet as aged gangster Silvermane uses it as a fountain of youth to restore himself. However, the cure actually de-ages him to an extent that he disappears.
Interesting to see maggia dwarf lawyer, Caesar Cicero, in these issues competeing with Silvermane as I know him from later PM/IF issues.
In another subplot of the tablet, Silvermane had kiddnapped dr Curt Connors and his family to create the fountain of youth formula. this of course triggers a transformation to the Lizard. Lizard fights are always tricky for Spidey as he doesnt want to risk hurting dr connors. Making things more interesting, the Human torch shows up and Spidey winds up fighting him to keep him from harming the lizard.
78-79 Night of the Prowler
We get a new villain, the very well-designed Prowler (so well designed that Todd McFarlane steals the design for Spawn). Now on one hand, it feels like they are trying to introduce neuance with the Prowler by making him a sympatetic villain. But the cynical side of my nature reminds me that Marvel always does this when they introduce black villains, afraid to make them all out bad.
Also, people often make fun of the fact the Prowler was a window washer (but no one ever makes fun of Electro for being a power-line repairman so the double-standard of self-ritiousness continues). Anyway, Spidey has entirely too much trouble with the Prowler, but its nice to see a story resolve without the villain going to jail.
Next up is a chameleon story only noteworthy for the way that spider-man points out that Peter Parker is the one person he knew the chameleon couldn't be. How Chameleon doesnt figure out Spidey's identity from this is beyond me.
Another new villain and boy is he bad. the only way the kangaroo could work would be played for laughs but they try to play it straight.
Ill pause here before finishing the vol up next time.
