Subj: Peplum review 27: Revenge of the Crusader (1964)

It felt time for a little bit of knightly peplum, which was a sub-genre of the Roman peplum (the best example being "the War Lord" with Charlton Heston, reviewed earlier)

This one is based on an old Belgian legend, in Italian it is Genoveffa di Brabante. The legend concerns a noble wife who is falsely accused of adultery while her husband is away.

It's not really clear exactly where and when the setting is, but the main character is called away at one point to join in the crusades. He is called Sigfrido and after coming to the aid of a rival Duke, he falls in love with, and marries the man's daughter. Later on, after beliving his lord to be lost, the castle's majordomo, tries to seduce his master's wife, then kicks her out after falsely accusing her of adultery.

The acting is fine in this, with plenty of sword fights. It even gets a bit bloody, when the majordomo kills another servant with an axe to the face.

The majordomo's plan seems crazy, but he does a good job of being devious and unlikable, despite being almost too good looking to be a bad guy.

Geniveve, the baron's wife, is the pretty actress Maria Jose Alonso, who has appeared in other peplums. She somehow manages to survive 4 years in a cave with a young son, living from deer's milk, yet still has a perfectly spun dress.

I'd be curious where they shoe the film, as the exterior of the castle looks really well-preserved for being of the time period. The climatic final fight shows off some great interiors of the castle.

Anyway, its ok for what it is. It's on youtube if you are interested: Here's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI02qfAzpik&t=3804s&ab_channel=PEPLUMTV
