Subj: Act One comes to a close

With the end of Tony Stark: Iron Man, Slott's first act on Iron Man has come to a close.

When it started, I was highly enthusiastic (and wrote here to that effect). Having read it all the way through, I've moved from "Yay!" to "Meh".

There are still some strong positives. Things I like include:
  • Diverse supporting cast, including new characters and old favourites,
  • Using Stark Unlimited as part of the story, rather than mainly ignoring it or keeping it as backdrop,
  • Fleshing out Tony's personal life.
  • Setting up all the pieces for Iron Man 2020 (e.g., Sunset Bain, Machine Man, Senator Brickman, Jocasta).

That said, I could never warm to the idea -- central to this series -- that Tony Stark is no longer Tony Stark. Over in Hickman's 'Dawn of X', dead mutants are being rebooted on a daily basis, and no one blinks an eye. This is the Marvel Universe, where folks come back from the dead in convoluted ways all the time. Tony Stark is still Tony Stark.

Even less appealing was the recurrence of alcohol in these pages. To describe the effect on the story, I shall quote Tony himself: "Not helping."

It is clear that the upcoming Iron Man 2020 event is akin to Slott's Superior Spider-Man. Tony will be back in armor at the end of it, with pieces set up for Slott to explore later. He plays a long game with his storytelling, which I generally like.

Anyone else expecting to meat Slick and Brain and Swift in the coming months?
