I'm referring to the pre Crisis stories of JLA in general.

I remember stories of Superman always being taken out of the story in some pretty contrived ways in order to let the other guys get a piece of the action. There was always a red solar radition cannon or something being used. Then of course I read a Swamp Thing issue with the JLA trying to figure out how to deal with the Florinic Man and Superman offers to count all the molecules in the Earth's atmosphere if it would help. He was pretty powerful really could do just about anything the other guys could do to some degree.

The idea is I believe Superman laid low in order for the other guys wouldn't feel "inferior." He didn't want to be the star player winning the game all by himself.

Why would he do something like this?

Perhaps Superman needed buddies who could relate to his superhero side. People in the hero community had secret I.D.s to worry about. He was an alien and on the team he had a Martian and some Thangarians. And those JLA/JSA team ups had guys relaxing and partying on the satellite. Can't get by doing that as timid and clumsy Clark kent.

I want to leave this open ended for further discussion and I have a few more ideas.

Any other opinions?
