As I promised, I picked up two copies of Justice League United #0 and let me say that it was a good start for a good series. It began in the Moon of Thalsalla, a moon of Thanagar, where the Justice League of Canada (Green Arrow, Animal Man, Adam Strange, Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, and Stargirl) battle aliens who have captured Alanna, Adam's fiance. Flashback to three years back, where there is a convention featuring Animal Man and Stargirl. An archaeologist named Adam Strange tells the two heroes the dilmena about how Alanna disappeared and shows them a strange skull. This leads them to an alien attack. We later shift to Moose Factory Island, where Miiyahbin returns home from a day of high school. She encounters a weird creature and with the word "Keewahtin" turns into Equinox and defeats the demon, which morphs into a clone of her.
Meanwhile, Adam tries to talk to the aliens, but the aliens attack. Stargirl summons fellow Justice League of America members Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter to aid them in the battle. With the help of Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter, the battle is now over. This later follows with an encounter between Green Arrow and Animal Man (two of Jeff Lemire's well known characters meet face to face at last), but Martian Manhunter quells the meeting. Stargirl asks why more JLA members do not show up. J'onn tells her that it was because of the villain uprising and the disbanding of the JLA. Luckilly, Green Arrow managed to show up just in time. Hopefully, we'll learn more about the JLA mystery in the upcoming Justice League of America #14.
Green Arrow discovers a tunnel beneath the snow which leads to more aliens. The group of five (Adam, Animal Man, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter, and Green Arrow) later encounter a fire alien, which defeats J'onn since his weakness is fire.
Back on the Moon of Thalsalla, two of the aliens tell their leader Byth about the encounter with the five heroes. He wants his prisoners to be disposed and sends Lobo to do the job. But Hawkman comes in to pick a fight with Lobo at the last minute, which leads us into the forthcoming Justice League United #1.
All in all, I say that this was a terrific issue, which introduces us to the eight members of JLC. One of the best parts of the story was when Animal Man and Green Arrow meet face to face. After all, both are characters often used by Jeff Lemire. Another thing I liked was the introduction to Equinox and I hope to see more of her soon. On the other hand, there were some things I did not like about the book. First up, Adam Strange was only in costume during the first part of the story. Likewise, Supergirl appeared in the first part of the story and Hawkman in the last part. Also, why didn't Hawkman join Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow when Stargirl summoned her teammates? I though he was going to be part of the team. Maybe he'll join later on alongside Supergirl. But still, I love this comic and I'm looking forward to issue #1 when it comes out in May.
As for future issues, Issue #1 (May), the new team of Adam Strange (hopefully in uniform), Green Arrow, Animal Man, Martian Manhunter, and Stargirl will fight the Unimaginable, an old enemy of Metamorpho. And, sadly, Metamorpho won't be there in time to help the team. On a later version of the cover, we see Equinox will also be featured, too. And at the end of JLU #0, we read that Hawkman and Supergirl will be featured as well. Hopefully, all three might join their comrades just in time for the team to form. Issue #2 (June) features a battle between Hawkman and Lobo while the rest of the team battles Byth on Thanagar. Issue #3 (July) features the possible death of one of the teammates (say it ain't so), Hawkman probably sacrificing his life to save Rann (a longtime enemy of Thanagar), and more of Equinox. The Future's End Special will feature the JLC and the Legion of Super Heroes fighting a Martian invasion. I just hope the team remains Adam Strange, Equinox, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Animal Man, Martian Manhunter, Stargirl, and Supergirl after Issue #3 because I love that team. And maybe one day, Atom and/or Black Canary will join the team as the ninth or tenth member.
