I can see the value of a film that goes back to the roots of Captain Marvel as a childs wish-fulfillment to become a Superman, but rather more problematic is the talk of the film in the context of the just forming Justice League stable from Warner's. What is the point of Captain Marvel here when you have Superman, and a household name at that...
It makes more sense to play Captain Marvel independent of the Justice League and operating in his own world, the worst thing they could do with him is drop him into this Justice League assembly and see him lose his identity amidst this bunch of more audience known heroes...

Maybe show him as being the Robin to Supes as bats to him, one to train and mentor him?
And he also has a definite role to be the big gun when facing Magical beings!

No, Captain Marvel needing/getting trained by Superman is ALMOST as bad of an idea as Batman being older than Superman.
Captain Marvel is his own hero and doesn't need training.

I agree, he should be his own man and his own legend. I have no good words concerning the recent Geoff Johns revamp as he stripped out everything I found appealing about the character and worse still made him so inherantly unlikable in BOTH identities that he surely failed to connect to any audience out there. There is a nasty, cynical, side to Geoff Johns' writing in recent years that has derailed numerous characters he has touched - his Wonder Woman being the clearest example.
The single best Captain Marvel tale in the last three years came from Grant Morrison just a couple of months ago in Multiversity's 'Thunderworld', he understands the simple appeal of the character and his world, and showed that the best way forward for the character is to put him on his own earth so he can stand tall as its greatest hero and exist in his own context. It has worked for Earth-2, and I feel it would work for the Shazam family as well.
