Justice League of America >> View Thread

I saw the banners for this week and I must say they are delightful. But the one that caught my attention was the first one. As a fan of the Satellite Era, I must say it was the best pre-New 52 roster. Having such heavyweights as Aquaman, Atom, Batman, Black Canary, Elongated Man, Firestorm, Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Hawkman (with Hawkgirl in tow), Martian Manhunter, Red Tornado, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Zatanna working together was a blast and I wish it could be revived in the New DC Universe. However, there were a few downsides to the roster:

1. Seeing that it's called the Justice League of America, the team was entirely white. They should have added someone of color, especially Black Lightning.

2. Another character that should have joined was Metamorpho, seeing that he said no in 1966.

3. Phantom Stranger's position in the roster was unclear. Was he a member or not?

4. Why did it have to be picked up by JL Detroit? Why couldn't the comic end in 1984 or the JLA continue after the Martian War?

5. Snapper Carr should have returned as the mascot. He would have been spending time with Sue Dibny.

6. They should have added another female like Black Orchid.

7. Adam Strange should have been a member.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Some VERY good questions, Kyle. I'll try to answer some of 'em for ye, at least. \:\)

1) I believe Gerry Conway was the writer of the two-parter that Black Lightning didn't join in on. He WANTED to have someone else refuse the team, if I'm remembering correctly. Also, there are some rights issues with Black Lightning, I think, with Tony Isabella. That might be part of the reason why they didn't have BL join the team.

2) Most of the writers probably didn't like or know what to do with Metamorpho. Hence, his honorary membership and VERY sporadic appearances.

3) No one on the team really knew themselves. At least until the Engelhart League of America, when PS reminded Superman that he was a member. Otherwise he'd always leave before the team found out if he accepted membership or not.

4) They wanted to capture the same lightning in a bottle that had struck The X-Men, Teen Titans, and Batman & The Outsiders. Unfortunately, this team couldn't carry it off.

5) It would have been pretty neat to see just who would have trusted Carr after his betrayal of the League. Would Batman have carried a grudge? Who would have? Aquaman? Hawkman?

6) I remember someone writing in a lettercol some reader came up with the idea that Black Orchid had been Power Girl in disguise on Earth-1 honing her powers until she was ready to make her debut in All-Star Comics. I always DID like that idea. \:\)

5) Adam Strange couldn't touch the Earth. He'd absorbed so much Zeta-Radiation that FINALLY allowed him to stay on Rann, that Earth's soil became poisonous to him.
