In honor of Canada, I want to talk about Justice League United, a.k.a. Justice League of Canada.

Just to refresh, the Justice League of America was created to combat the mainstream Justice League and to be trusted by the public so that the mainstream Justice League can be seen as untrusted. The mission was unsuccessful and the JLA ended up working with both the mainstream JL and Justice League Dark during the events of Forever Evil. In the end, many of its members were absorbed in the Firestorm Matrix, leaving behind two members, Martian Manhunter and Stargirl. Team leader Steve Trevor was not satisfied with the League and the group disbanded.

Four of the JLA, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Hawkman, and Stargirl, all relocated to Canada and joined forces with Animal Man, Supergirl, and new hero Adam Strange to form the Justice League Canada, later renamed Justice League United. In time, a First Nations girl named Miiyahbin showed up and later joined the group under the codename Equinox. During their first outing, the group fought Byth and Lobo on Earth and in Rann. It was that mission that Hawkman sacrificed himself while trying to save Rann and Thanagar.

With the remaining members returning to Earth, the group met Equinox while protecting a baby alien named Ultra. The Legion of Super Heroes showed up claiming that baby Ultra is a potential threat. In truth, the real threat was Infinitus. This lead to a cosmic battle between the JLU and entire Legion against Infinitus, Byth, and a mind-controlled Hawkman, the latter of which ended up rejoining his teammates in the end. The outcome of the battle was that Hawkman traveled to Thanagar in order to play diplomat to his home country, Green Arrow leaving the team as well, Animal Man returning to his wife and daughter, Stargirl and Supergirl hanging out with Equinox, Adam Strange and his fiancé Alanna reuniting after changing places with one another, and Martian Manhunter staying behind to clean up things, before leaving as well. All of this was written by the talented Jeff Lemire.

Now that Canadian Jeff Lemire is gone, Justice League United is going in a different direction with Jeff Parker. He's turning the team in a JL Task Force-like team. For starters, his main team is Adam and Alanna Strange, Animal Man, Stargirl, and newcomer Equinox. Parker is not using traditional members Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, and Hawkman, three reasons I bought two copies of JLU every month. I understand Supergirl is going through a few changes after losing her powers, but she might return once she is straightened out with. I wonder if the new JLU is still located in Canada.

Another thing that bothers me is the guests used in this series. Some of the guests I like, including Apollo, Atom (a character I always wanted to see since the beginning), Batgirl, Beast Boy, Black Lightning, Blue Devil, Booster Gold, Captain Atom, Dove, Deadman, Fire, Godiva, Guy Gardner, Hawk, Ice, Katana, Mary Marvel, Mera, OMAC, Orion, Robotman, Stargirl, Steel, and Vixen, since they all fit in with the Justice League style. Others I'm not too sure about, like Bizarro, Black Jack, Brainiac, Captain Carrot, Catwoman, Deathstroke, Etrigan, Firestorm, Gorilla Grodd, John Constantine, Kid Flash, Lex Luthor, Mongul, Phantom Stranger, Poison Ivy, Shazam, Sinestro, Swamp Thing, Vandal Savage, Wonder Girl, Wonder Woman, and Zatanna. They should be either with the mainstream JL, JLD, Teen Titans, or villains. If I was writing the JLU title, my roster would be Martian Manhunter (as leader), Green Arrow, Atom, Hawkman, Black Canary, Stargirl, Animal Man, Adam Strange, Alanna Lewis, Equinox, Starfire, and Ch'p, with a guest star every now and then and it would still be located in Canada.

So Happy Canada Day to the JLU!!!
