JSA Classified #27 was one of the worst issues of a JSA title I have read to date and that is saying something. First you have a story basis that has been used to death lately - the underground supervillian gambling organization. Second, the geneius writer decided Wildcat had too stable a back story so they decided to make his father a habitual gambler regardless of what 50+ years of history have told us otherwise. Third, the whole payoff to the story is one little last minute appearance by one of Darkside's minions to give this a tie in to the whole Countdown build up. Finally, the story was so weak it could have easily been wrapped up in one issue but thank god they only drug it out to two!

If that weren't bad enough, just about everyone involved in this piece of crap should be reprimanded for not doing at least five minutes worth of fact checking before this left the publisher. If Ted Grant had a trust fund set up, who set it up and how was his father able to deplete it? The whole purpose of a trust fund is to keep money safe and insure that only certain sums are taken out for certain purposes - like education. Even if Ted's father were the executor of said fund, it should have still been extremely difficult for him to deplete it that quickly. The date of death on Ted Grant's father's tombstone is shown as 1939. If Ted Grant was in college when his father supposedly died and we assume that the "several years later" when he really died was only five years, that would make Ted an absolute minimum of 91 now. Even if DC really does intend for him to be that old it still seems completely unnessicary to show the year on the grave marker and nail it down now.

As bad as the wrting was though, at least the sucky art help distract the reader from it. Hourman looked like a steroid infused wino in one of the last panels of the story. Since when is Rick Tyler an unshaven muscle bound lunk even if he is juiced on Miracalo?

This was one of the few times I really wanted to take a book back to my local comic store and demand a refund but sadly I didn't. If I honestly thought they would have returned it to Diamond and Diamond would have returned it to DC, I would have.
