I'm trying to keep up, at a distance, with Earth-2, although not reading the book, because of being a Superman fan and due to the goings on with Power Girl and Brutaal, both of which I count as Superman characters.

Is Val-Zod supposed to be the son of the Earth-2 universe's version of General Zod, only apparently in that universe he was both black and not a General? Have they given his mother's name (Faora or Ursa)? His father's?

Just wondering. His family name being "Zod" is certainly an attention getter for Superman fans, despite his skin color. IS he "Zod's" son?

Yes, he's Zod's son, the point of difference though is that in the universe of Earth-2 his father wasn't the same Dru-Zod who we are usually accustomed to.
Think of his father in terms of the Superman of Earth-23 of whom Grant Morrison created - unlike our regular Superman this version is both black skinned and hails from Vultho Island on Krypton. He is Kalel and shares much the same backstory as our regular Superman, with some slight but notable differences. With Val-Zod's parents the differences go one step further than this as instead of soldiers they are scientists firmly dedicated to non-violence. So presumably rather than take up military service this version of Zod was predestined for the world of rational science.

There does appear to be the suggestion that Earth-2's Jor-el may not have been a scientist, nor the one who warns the high council of Krypton's imminent fate. On Earth-2 it is strongly suggested that it was actually Zod and his wife who take the role...

So is earth 2 based on earth Prime then in the NU?

is it that the earth of our kal is the "real one", and that all other earths came spun off from that?

The official stance from DC is that the regular Justice League earth we read about is Prime Earth and every other earth is... secondary.
I don't know if there is any other logic than that at work, it has certainly always been odd that Earth-2 became such a significant and sustained target for Apokolips whereas Prime-Earth fared much much better, even though they had more heroes to call on for Darkseid's initial invasion I don't believe you can just chalk it down to the formation of the Justice League and its distinctive individual members - the League won that initial incursion, while Earth-2's original trinity died ending a full scale war, and only after a good several years of fighting it off...

Prime-Earth does appear the more potent universe.

Actually, I think, it had more to do with dumb luck and bad planning than potency. The Earth 1 Heroes stumbled over Darkseids scheme before his invasion could really get off. The transfer of Powergirl and Huntress also indicate that this happened at the same time when the heroes of Earth 2 stopped the invasion. Where things, even the preperation of the Invasion seemed to move slower and apparently was being more thought through.

It looks to me that Darkseid simply overestimated himself being greedy or being desperate, while not being the same strategical genius like Uncle Steppenwolf. So the whole mess backfired on him, because the heroes noticed him earlier.

Well, in the Batman/Superman story where the two versions of Bats and Supes meet each other (early in the careers of the Prime versions, apparently just before the invasion of Earth-2) it was said the younger versions were darker, more violent, aggressive, something like that.

And that weird being who caused two other universes to merge with the pre-Flashpoint universe during the Sept. 2011 reboot did say it was done so that there'd be a universe strong enough to deal with the 'big badness' that was coming.

And so, as you said, "Prime-Earth does appear the more potent universe."

The only problem with that is, that the big bads were already soundly defeated pre-reboot: Darkseid, the CSA, the Anti-Monitor, Neron, Nekron...

Till now, all we have seen so far are rebooted old menaces. And coming nex: "The Anti-Monitor!", who seems to be the big badness again, which doesn't really make sense so far, with Pandoras explanation, since he had gotten his butt kicked already.

Will this madness never end?

PLEASE!!!! STOP using "PC" to mean ANYTHING!!!

In English it tends to mean "Politically Correct".

With regards to DC Comics, it could mean "pre-Crisis" or "post-Crisis".

With that being the case, PLEASE, in the name of sanity itself, PLEASE USE "PRE" OR "POST" TO CLARIFY WHAT YOU MEAN!!!!

(Anyone else reading this, PLEASE do likewise!)
