Subj: Question about Kendra Saunders
Posted: Mon Sep 15, 2014 at 10:41:54 am EDT (Viewed 580 times)

Here's a simple question: When was Kendra Saunders first stated to have Hispanic heritage on her mother's side of the family? Which issue (probably of the JSA series that ran from 1999 to 2006) spelled it all out for us?

Near as I can tell after a quick check, the subject never came up in her first few appearances, as collected within the TPB "JSA: Justice Be Done" -- the early issues of the JSA series that was launched in 1999. When she debuted, we were merely told she was a 19-year-old girl from Texas who was now trying to revive the superheroic role of "Hawkgirl" -- she even had the original "Nth Metal flying belt" of the original Hawkgirl of the Golden Age, since the late Shiera Saunders had been Kendra's very own great-aunt!

If necessary, I can reread that entire JSA series and keep an eye peeled for any passing reference to Kendra's ethnicity, but I wondered if one of my fellow fans could save me some trouble! I just vaguely remember that her mom (long dead before we ever met Kendra) was of Hispanic heritage -- and online resources confirm that -- but I can't for the life of me remember when and where I first became aware of that fact!

I'm asking this because I'm just trying to pin down a historical detail for a big project I'm working on. I want to know when it was first made clear to DC fans that the JSA had finally acquired its first Hispanic member. (For all I know, this may not have been "stated for the record" until a couple of years after Kendra had joined up in the first place?)

Quoth Our Raven -- Beast Boy finally works up the nerve to ask Raven for a date, with odd results. [Set in the TV show's continuity, this is a humorous narrative poem loosely modeled on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven."]
