Tiger Shark and I, as everyone know, love the old villains and wish there were more writers out there who were willing to write decent stories with them. Well, Ed Brubaker is one such writer. His new DAREDEVIL issue is out this week, and I can't wait. Not only is he using old DD villain the Gladiator, but he is also using another old/obscure DD villain as the mastermind behind the current plotline! It's a mystery, so we won't find out who this character is for a bit, but here's what Brubaker had to say about it:

Readers will most certainly be paying attention to the bits and pieces of future installments of "To the Devil, His Due," as they try to deduce the identity of the mastermind behind the crime wave in Hell's Kitchen and Gladiator's blackout inducing murderous rages. "It's a familiar villain," Brubaker said. "I have to credit Ralph Macchio for pointing out this old Daredevil villain. I had read just about every issue of 'Daredevil' at this point, so I knew this villain, but I actually hadn't considered much of them. I was talking to Ralph about 'Daredevil' one day and he just sort of offhandedly suggested this character as someone who could have been a major Daredevil villain and he pointed out that up until Frank Miller, nobody really considered Bullseye to be Daredevil's arch nemesis. So I though, huh – taking an old Daredevil villain that has never been really seen as an arch nemesis and trying to make them a really cool and messed up villain might be fun."

And there's more:

All I can say is "Thanks, Ed Brubaker". I am very much hoping this old villain he's using is someone I remember and someone I like. PErhaps it's Mr. Kline (although unlikely)? That's what needs to be done. I think each writer need to look through the back issues of the books they're working on, pick some obscure fellow and use him/her in a great, well-written storyline. Think of it as a challenge!

I read the article further, and Brubaker has plans for the Ox (and other old DED villains)! That's what I'm talking about, Marvel writers! \:\-\) You can do it! Accept the challenge! \:\-\)

Now I'm thinking it could be the Organizer! That would be cool.

...and the damned Red Skull? Yet we don't disparage them as a hero comics culture. Nor the Mandarin, or Attuma, Loki, or Kang.

So there's no good reason at all for anyone to disparage the Ox, the Eel, the Owl, the Vanisher, the Flying Dutchman, Tiger Shark, the Faceless One, the Corruptor, Dr. Dorcas, the Piranhna, the Melter, Commander Kraken, Mesmero, or 98% of the others we no longer see. Not even Mr. Doll.

....or obscure mostly because I can't think of any other term for them and I'm used to it. But I agree with you.

Of course I know what you meant. Most of them got plenty of regular play until the Harras era, and even then reared their heads time and again. It was JQ and crew that dispensed them to oblivion. But even the Harras era went ahead and created scores of new characters, something not exactly happening now.

Diablo, for instance, has great potential. What was done with Annihilus could be done with him.

And not just to Diablo, as you and I know.

Harras did well by me with the Crossing, but that is well known around these parts. I also liked his Gatherers.

Giffen is planning on using another "older, established" villain as the main baddie for ANNHILATION:CONQUEST. I wonder who it will be?
