It's funny how people make up stuff to use as evidence against things they don't like. Comic sales increased 8% between 2014 and 2015 (obviously the last full year for which data is available) and Marvel was easily the most dominant company in market share in 2015:

In other words, their books are not collecting dust on the shelves.

We're in 2016, and sales are down almost 10% from 2015.

Not going to say anything political like this is the reason though.

comic sales as a whole have gone up 8% but that doesnt mean all books go up. I believe that sales for the female thor have been dropping. Whenever they make radical changes to characters or add a lot of PC/SJW elements those titles typically you see a decline in sales. not all marvel books are seeing dust, but they lose readers when they shoehorn in SJW themes or have diversity quotas that they have to meet. Marvel is stuck in between a rock and a hard place: Appease the SJW and give them their characters and lose their core fans, or keep their core fans but piss off the SJWs. In the end they will go where ever the money is and the people that are pushing for more diversity typically are not ones who buy comics, they are trying to push political ideas.

I am all for more diversity and think that comics are for everyone, but do you think that instead of changing white characters to minorities they should just make new ones. That is what makes Spawn, Falcon, and Black Panther so cool is that they are not just wearing another characters costume. If you want to have a book with a political messeage I think that they should release a seperate title for it. just dont shoehorn it in and force it in the stories where people dont really want to see them.

I think you're way overgeneralizing this division between SJW and everyone else. Not everyone who would like diversity in a Marvel Universe that has historically emphasized white males characters is a SJW. Also, Mighty Thor sales are doing just fine, having stabilized at around sales of 50,000 units a month. For the first 6 months of 2016 in terms of total units sold, Mighty Thor is the 22nd best selling title in all of comics, better than any Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Daredevil, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hulk, or Captain America titles and better than any DC title not in the Batman or Superman family.




I wrote about this in another thread here, so I'll just restate it: I'm sympathetic to your point and Marvel has tried creating original characters. They don't get very far because consumers have finite funds and finite time. Given how expensive comics are, who's going to trade their established Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Avengers, X-Men, etc. comics to pick up comics about a new hero? Only a small segment of comic buyers. But when you introduce a new character as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, or Thor, then comic readers don't have to make that choice. Not having that choice makes a lot of people mad, and that's understandable. But a lot of people keep buying these comics anyway and some new people whose demographics are being appealed to start buying these comics when they weren't before. That has kept these titles selling as well as they did before, sometimes better.

I'm sure Marvel's thought process is that eventually all these old heroes come back (like Steve Rogers just did), but the "replacement" heroes continue on or appear in other incarnations. In DC, Wally West replaced Barry Allen as the Flash and Kyle Rayner replaced Hal Jordan. Even with Barry and Hal back, there is a strong demand among fans for Wally and Kyle. Marvel probably hopes for the same. More black, Latino, Asian, and female characters bring in more black, Latino, Asian, and female readers, readers that characters like Misty Knight or Shang-Chi don't draw but extremely marketable iconic names like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor do. Then the originals return, many old readers come back, and new readers stay on.
