No Steve Dillon on the art. Thank God. That means I can buy it. I can't stand that guy's art. It's like one never-ending smirk. Smirk smirk smirk smirk everywhere a smirk smirk. Blecch.
Guiu Vilanova is one of my new favorite artists. This guy was born to draw and ink the Punisher. This is what I want Punisher art to look like.
Oh, and he makes Frank look like the TV version. Which is fine with me. I can't wait to watch the Netflix series, which I think drops tomorrow.
So should you buy this comic? I say yes. I'm completely on board.
Why are Slavic people so scary? It used to be German people who were the automatic instinctive villains. Still is, sometimes, like on the TV series The Strain. But more and more I notice the go-to scary guys are Slavic. Which is the case in this story. Except of course they aren't as scary as Frank. Nobody is. Which is the whole point of the character. Another Frank - some guy named Miller - once said the Punisher was Batman without the lies. In many ways this is true. Definitely when it comes to using fear as a weapon. If you want to scare bad guys, you need to be a killer. Simple as that. If they knew you won't kill them, or even brutally injure them, they will not fear you. Not even if you wear a cape you stole from Dracula.
Not too much gratuitous gore in this issue. Except in one panel and it wasn't really gore, exactly. Dillon would have had a lot more gore, with smirks.
Nick Fury Junior is in this, and he's perfect. I love him as a Punisher supporting character. The two of them have a ton of cinematic chemistry together. Makes me wish Samuel L.Jackson would show up in the Netflix series.
Frank makes sure to not kill any soldiers. That's always been his saving grace in my eyes and every writer I know has respected it. Cops and soldiers do not get killed. Frank would choose instead to let himself die. But soldiers do get kicked in the head. That's allowed.
Fury Junior thinks Frank will give back the War Machine armor when the caper is finished. Or at least he acts like he thinks that. Get serious, Nick. This isn't Batman, who once rejected a Green Lantern ring, saying it would only get in his way. This is Frank Castle, who uses whatever ordinance he can get, the bigger and badder the better.
Yeah, I'm all in. Let's kill some Chernayan butchers.
Oh, and by the way, they kill kids. For a lot of people, that's the button that, once pressed, allows the Punisher to get a pass. I think maybe Fury Junior is one of those people. Although I really don't think he minds if bad guys die. Does anybody? I get the whole law and order thing. Frank is the antithesis of law and order. He's Chaotic Good. A lot of people want no part of the Chaotic part. But does anyone really doubt the Good part?
