Hey there cats an' kittens, an' welcome to the foist installment of Music Fun! \:\) Paste Pot Pete and I will be alternating weeks, and I got the '80's assignment. I'm too old to have listened to much music after 1990, so that suits me JUST fine. \:\)

Now, a fair warning here... You MAY be overcome with nostalgia when you listen to some of this music. It may not hit now, but it WILL hit! It happened to ME during a Weird Al video on VH-1 about 20 years ago. I was suddenly overcome, missing family and other loved ones who are no longer with us. I actually had TEARS streaming down my face! I'm not telling you this to depress you, but to let you know. You MAY want to view/listen to these songs in private, especially if it's been 20-30 years since you last heard them.

Now, let's get on with the music. I've got six songs lined up, and I'll CONTINUE having that many every week. For the first 10 weeks, I'm going to go through every year during the '80's, and after that, it'll be a hodge-podge. I'll ALSO try to have the original music video where and when I can, but it's not always possible. When I cannot, I'll at least try to have the lyrics. Whichever I choose, I'll choose the version with the best sound for that song. \:\) Now, put on yer listenin' ears, cats, 'cause HERE WE GO! \:\)

Rocky Burnette
sings
Tired Of Toein' The Line

Kim Carnes
sings
More Love

John Mellencamp
sings
This Time

Carole King
sings
One Fine Day

Irene Cara
sings
Fame

Hope you enjoyed this sampling from 1980! Paste Pot Pete's gonna Quantum Leap all of you ten years into the future (still the past) to the 1990's next week! \:\)

The Carole King song One Fine Day made me do a double take as that originally came out in the 60's. But I looked it up and King did cover her own song in 1980. Good job! I'm a big Carole King fan if that's wrong I don't want to be right. When I was a kid my older brother and sister played "Really Rosie" all the time. And as I've gotten older I love her debut album "Tapestry" one of the greatest albums ever.

P.S. If we're Quantum Leaping I hope our brains don't get "swiss-cheesed"

Heh. I was 18 when all of these songs first came out. I graduated from high school in May of '80, so I remembered "One Fine Day."

And your reaction to hearing that song is pretty much what I expected! I'm gonna have fun with this thread, just as I'm sure you'll have fun with YOUR end! \:\)

P.S. The last time my brain was "Swiss-cheesed" I put out a mouse trap! ;\)

If that Irene Cara video doesn't say "80s" - nothing does! \(cool\)

Is the request line open?

I want to request Weird Al songs. One of my favorites is Melanie so put that in your back pocket for 1988, but in the meantime which ever ones you like. \:\)

As soon as I saw the clip was from Solid Gold, I wanted to see it. Then when I saw the "special effects," there was NO way I was NOT gonna put it up! \:\)

I know I swore up and down that I'd do the 90's music every other week. but I'm getting antsy. Maybe I better do it each week. I'm gonna work on it tonight.

Wow. I had no idea John Cougar had recorded a song before Jack & Diane. Thanks for posting this thread, it was fun look back.

You're welcome, and John Cougar's been around since the 1970's. You've missed out on a LOT of great music! \:\)

Wow. Rocky Burnette. I've heard the song before but never saw the video. It's so goofy it's almost like they didn't know what to do in front of the camera. Music videos were something new then.
I'd like to request Know Your Rights by the Clash and, if you're going to include the B-52's, and how could an 80's message board not, Roam instead of Loveshack.

Knowing Gernot, I'm sure some Weird Al is in the line up.
I'd like Mellow When I'm Dead, or Happy Birthday.

I wouldn't say predicable, but you do have your leanings. And I hope that means Jump N' the Saddle Band will be making an appearance on the board.

I was kind of wondering if you going to post Lifeguard by Blotto. I remember that song getting some play in the earliest days of MTV.

Oh man. Do you know that song has haunted me for decades? For some reason I was sure it was a Devo tune, to the point of not questioning it, yet I could never find it on any Devo album. No wonder! Duh.

Thanks for solving one of my great unsolved mysteries!

My pleasure. This board has really inspired me to revisit a bunch of old tunes, so much so that I feel like I'm neglecting comic book threads! YouTube really is great. They must have every song ever recorded on there. I do a lot of searching at work on my phone though and about half of the videos won't play on mobile devices.

I don't want to flood the board with video requests, but does anyone remember No Secrets by Angel City from 1980? That song kicks ass!

Even directly off YouTube they won't play?

Yeah. I believe it's a copyright thing. They don't want you using your iphone like an ipod, and getting the songs for free. But, I guess if you listen to them on your computer, it's ok. It tends to be stuff by the bigger groups. Most of the obscure stuff I'm able to watch on my phone.

I never heard that song before! I always listened to a Top 40 station, but St. Louis is SO conservative that song probably never made it on the air here.

Now, that's NOT saying I won't ever play such a request, but for the first ten weeks, I wanna go through each year of the '80's: '81, '82, '83... I'm tryin' to bring on that wave of nostalgia I mentioned in the first post, I guess. ;\)

So, to keep things straight for awhile, please limit your immediate requests to the year I'm GOING to play next. It'll be easier on all of us and you'll be more likely to have me remember to play your song. \:\)

I never got why they continued to call it alternative in the 90s. Alternative to what? It was all over the airways.

Wasn't the '90's when rap really invaded America's eardrums and became mainstream? Alternative was the alternative to THAT. ;\)

Although honestly a lot of late 80's early 90's Rap was fun. What came later was pure shit but some of those early 90's rap songs were kind of catchy.

One rap song I love from the 90's was Tupac's Keep Ya Head Up. Everyone who knows me knows I'm white and square but I still love that song.

I was never a fan of rap music, either, but I thought N.W.A's Express Yourself was a fantastic song.

I liked Milli Vanilli's "Girl You Know It's True" and whoever did "Gangsta's Paradise" and Weird Al's "Amish Paradise." Al turned me onto the original song, though. \:\)

I loved the Beastie Boys and enjoyed some of Eminem's songs. I like it when someone pulls off a rap/rock mix like OutKast or Gorillaz.

Don't forget Aerosmith and Run-DMC. This was like the Superman Vs the Amazing Spider-Man Treasury of rock/rap music of the 80s. I remember the rockers at school being appalled by this video. Lol
