Subj: Delayed Review of Edge of Spider-Verse #3 (of 5)
Posted: Tue Sep 30, 2014 at 04:42:02 pm EDT (Viewed 109 times)

This issue is about the Aaron Aikman Spider-Man.

We stand at a precipice, at the...

The biggest threat in Spider-Man history is coming, and it's going to take EVERY SPIDER-MAN EVER to stop it! Each issue of this miniseries will introduce you to an amazingly different and fascinating Spider-Character who will play a role in SPIDER-VERSE!

We see a layout of a large, metropolitan city. Narrator: "The Ikegami Medical Center and Research Institute boasts world-class medical facilities and cutting-edge laboratories." Inside one building, we see a male scientist working in a lab. Narrator: "Doctor Aaron Aikman, at only 27 years old, is a highly accomplished and brilliant molecular biologist at Ikegami, where he's made signifigant contributions in bioengineering and molecular chemistry. At the center of his work is his research on the medical applications of insect venoms." We now see the inside of his body, including his heart. Narrator: "Three years ago, Aaron Aikman underwent a treatment that he developed and administered in secrecy." Aaron with machines and tubes hanging from his body and connected to some machine. Narrator: "The treatment was designed to resequence his DNA, inserting cloned spider genes into his own." We now see Aaron trying on his Spidey mechanical suit, then webswinging through the city with it. Narrator: "Aaron was imbued with extraordinary powers. He became a hero for the city. He became THE SPIDER-MAN."

We now see a half-body layout of Aaron/Spidey. Narrator: "As the Spider-Man, Aaron has fantastic strength and agility. He is able to crawl on walls and, using his molecular bioengineering genius, has formulated a silk webbing solution." Text-window pointing at his helmet. Text-window: "Helmet with an array of sensors and heads-up displays" Text-window pointing at his forearm: "Silk-spinner, silk solution cartridge (concealed in the arm casing)" Text-window pointing at a "stinger" extending from his belt: "Neuro-pulse stinger (located on a retractable cable on his belt)" Text-window pointing at his foot: "Catapult propulsion boots" A super villian is now shown in a kind of profile, with fire and destruction around him, called "Redeye." Redeye: "Born in the great red storm of Jupiter, Redeye will destroy you all!" Narrator: "Redeye was the reason Aaron became the Spider-Man. He was his first foe. We now see a bio-list of the character:

Real Name: Rick Landress
Group Affiliation: The Apocalyptics
Height: 6'6
Weight: 370 lbs.
Battles Fought: 9
Wins: 7
Losses: 1
Ties: 1
Win Percentage 77%
Arch-enemies: The Spider-Man, Devil Rescue, Bullwhip.
First Appearance: (as Rick Landress) THE SPIDER-MAN #1 (as Red-Eye) THE SPIDER-MAN #3

"Commander Rick Landress was an astronaut on the first manned mission to the moons of Jupiter. When one of the crew was mysteriously found dead, the rest turned on each other. Rick soon discovered that their mission was not what they were led to believe and that the ship was in danger. He tried leaving in an escape pod, but it was too late. The ship was bombarded with cosmic radiation and Rick's pod hurtled out of control into Jupiter. When Rick returned to Earth as Redeye he had the power to create huge gusts of wind and storms.

Did you know: Redeye is currently believed dead, defeated by The Spider-Man under a barrage of falling buildings."

We see the front page of a newspaper: "Over 100 Victims In Naamurah Kidnappings a city gripped in fear." Narrator: "After the 'Jovian Destroyer,' more villians rose to take his place, and with each, Dr. Aikman rose to stop them as The Spider-Man. One year ago, a new, exceedingly elusive and mysterious villian, known as Naamurah, appeared in the city." Naamurah, clinging to the side of a building with what looks like robot spider-legs, is shown immune to The Spider-Man's attacks, hurts him and tears apart some of his costume, causing him to fall on top of a nearby, shorter building. Narrator: "In their one confrontation, she nearly defeated him. His stinger had no effect, and she easily broke through his silk." Naamurah speaks to the fallen Spidey, her eyes glowing brightly: "I've come through the door in the dark. More like me wait. You, little spider, will make great food for them. This world--will--fall." We now see her profile as well:

Real name: Unknown

Power Ratings:
Strength: 5
Speed: 5
Agility: 4
Stamina: 2
Durability: 2
Intelligence: 7

Group affiliation: None.
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 200 lbs.
First Appearance: THE TERRIBLE HULK #50

No one knows where Naamurah came from, or what she wants. What we know is that she strikes in the night, kidnapping people while they sleep. Few have ever seen Naamurah. She moves quickly and in complete stealth.

Do you know: The first clue to Naamarah's existence was that people in proximity to her attacks all had the same nightmare?

Aaron is driving back to Ikegami at night. Narrator: "At night, while the labs are empty, Dr. Aikman takes advantage of the facilities. No one knows his secret..." Inside the lab, Aaron is working with some scientific equipment. Aaron: "...modified cloned protein molecules, nematic liquid crystalline, H2 N.M.R. spectroscopy, rotating axis perpendicular to the magnetic field at 200 HZ, yield phase biaxiality parameters--replaced ionizer and moisture retainer--if my compressor duct doesn't jam, there is no way NAAMURAH will escape the silk."

A woman is walking down a hallway at Ikegami in scientist-garb, followed by a ton of other workers with tablets/writing boards/whatever. Narrator: "The one meaningful relationship Aaron has is with Dr. Kaori Ikegami, founder of the Ikegami Institute and his boss." She's now doing other work stuff with a writing-pad before her. Narrator: "Dr. Ikegami is a brilliant medical scientist and surgeon, but it's her specialization in mechanical engineering and advances in robotics and prosthetics that made it possible to turn her lab into a leading force in scientific advancement. A gifted business woman and leader, she diversified the institute beyond her specialties and served as a mentor to researchers like Dr. Aikman." A young girl is about to get hit with a car on the street. Narrator: "Seven years ago, Kaori's 10-year-old daughter, Hannah, was hit by a car." The girl is on hospital bed, appearing to be severly hurt, and being looked over by Kaori and Aaron. Narrator: "Hannah survived, but she suffered irreversible brain damage and will remain in a persistent vegetative state for the rest of her life. Kaori didn't accept that. Relinquishing control of the institute, she dedicated herself full-time to curing her daughter." She and Aaron walk down the street together casually. Narrator: "Aaron lent his support and spent much of his time working with Kaori to develop a cure for Hannah. In the time they spent together, they grew closer, and a relationship that was once student to teacher became something more." Kaori runs fast down a Ikegami hallway, away from Aaron. Narrator: "Until one day, when Kaori suddenly changed, she moved her daughter into a separate facility and told Aaron she no longer wanted his help. Though Aaron still loves her, their relationship has become strained, and he sees her with less and less frequency."

At Aaron's apartment at early night, he works within his Spidey-suit closet. Narrator: "With more time to devote to his vigilante activities, Dr. Aikman recently found a pattern in Naamurah's kidnappings. So, after months of careful planning, The Spider-Man will finally put an end to the city's kidnapping nightmare." There's a knock on his door. He opens it to see Kaori. Aaron: "Kaori? What a suprise. What are you doing here?" Kaori: "Oh, Aaron." Both then share a passionate kiss, and then hold each other in their arms. Kaori: "Let's run away together. Just the two of us. We could go anywhere." Aaron: "Kaori, that would be wonderful, but you know we can't do that. *I* can't do that...but I'm glad you've come. I hardly see you anymore." Kaori: "I know. I've missed you--I've missed everything...Aaron, I need help. I don't know what to do anymore. I've ruined everything." Aaron: "It's okay. You're ok. Whatever's wrong, we'll get through it together tomorrow. I have to catch a Redeye to the Panacea Institute tonight. I'm giving a presentation in the morning, but I want you to stay here. I'll be back for dinner tomorrow. I know what you're going through. It's going to be okay." She then pushes him off her and cries. Kaori: "No...you don't know ANYTHING. You don't get it. It will NEVER be ok. I shouldn't have come here. You're 'catching a plane'...LIAR. You must think I'm STUPID. Why haven't you asked me about HANNAH? You've just forgotten about her? You never cared about her, did you? You--just wanted me." Aaron (in astonishment): "My God, Kaori. No. You made it perfectly clear Hannah was no longer any of my business. I was HELPING you! Why did you push me out, Kaori? You couldn't face it, could you...? She's dead, isn't she?" Kaori: "You think you know everything. What else should I have expected from you?" She runs out of the building and into her car on the street. Aaron gives chase, and yells to her as she gets in. Aaron: "Wait! Kaori! I'm sorry. Don't leave like this." She then immediately drives off. Aaron: "Damn it." He watches as she continues off. Aaron (mentally): "Does she think she can just show up and I'll drop everything? She's in pain, but what can I do? THERE'S NO TIME FOR THIS. Tonight, The Spider-Man attacks."

We now see The Spider-Man leaping around the city at night, looking for trouble. The Spider-Man: "Alone, I stand against the rising tide, and as I live, all evil shall fall." He uses his helmet to scan the area. TSM: "Motion detection mode on. Eliminate ground level activity. Monitor all police frequencies, audio off, heads-up text alert for keywords related to Naamurah." He then notices something in the air nearby. TSM: "Wait, what's that? Detection 2, lock. Magnify. Save. That's her." We see Naamurah now moving along on a rooftop, carrying some woman in tow. TSM web-swings toward her. TSM: "Right in the heart of the southeast quadrant. Right on schedule." He weblines the hostage, and swings her out of Naamurah's grasp. Naamurah's shocked and angry, then takes off down the side of the building. With the hostage safely webbed up, TSM says: "Location mark. Notify police--rescued Naamurah victim. Unconscious. At marked location." He then swings away after Naamurah again. TSM (mentally): "Can't lose her now. Come on, show yourself. Wait! In the rear-view display!" He sees something up above him. Before he can do anything, Naamurah falls down to TSM and grabs him by the throat, and both fall together. Naamurah: "Are you the best they've got? There's no man or aberration who can stop us!" He webs her up, and lets her hit the street as he swings away. She then stands back up, with pedestrians nearby shocked, one even recognizing her. TSM is then shown standing nearby, and starts webbing her back up again. TSM: "It's over, Naamurah! You've terrorized this city TOO LONG! It ends now! TELL ME--THE PEOPLE YOU TOOK!" He then grabs her, and is about to punch her. TSM: "What have you done with--what?" He then gets a closer look at the person's face, who appears male and older. TSM: "You're not Naamurah." "Naamurah": "I am Daarroh, and there are more like us. MANY more. Your efforts are in vain and your victory here, an illusion...You are the one who has let the spider inside, yes? HAHAHA!" TSM: "Speak, monster. What do you know about me?" Daarroh: "When I came through the door, I saw. In the corridor between our worlds, there is...death comes for you, Spider-Man." TSM: "Wait. I know your face! You're one of the VICTIMS." He continues to hold him as he talks: "You can't be their hero. little Spider-Man. Mankind is doomed." TSM: "Where are they, Daarroh? The other victims! Answer me!" He then loses consciousness, with TSM saying: "Don't you die on me!"

The next day at Ikegami Medical Center, Daarroh is shown on a hospital bed, hooked up to various machines and whatnot, with Aaron, some doctor, and others standing by. Doctor: "The patient sustained serious injuries, compound fractures in both legs, some internal hemorrhaging, fractured ribs, deep lacerations on the upper arms, chest, and head. He's comatose. But that likely has more to do with the device. The machine was connected directly to the brain stem. We've removed the device completely, but at this point we can't be certain of the extent of the trauma to his brain. It's possible we may see a full recovery. Aaron: "But it was a kind of robotic suit." Doctor "Something like that. Actually, this patient might not have made it if it weren't for Spider-Man's aid at the scene. I wouldn't be surprised if his secret identity is an E.M.T." Aaron: "The robotic suit. Do you still have it?" Doctor: "That's why I asked you here, Dr. Aikman. Police are taking it as evidence, but are leaving it with us overnight. They want our expert analysis, and with Dr. Ikegami...unreachable, I hoped you would be able to help." Aaron: "I'm not a roboticist." Doctor: "What? Have you become suddenly MODEST, Aikman? That's not like you. But you're right. It's not about the machine." The Doctor holds up a clear bag containing some kind of small machine with tendrils, somewhat in blood. Aaron looks up at it from the patient, and is startled. Doctor: "It's about this--the machine had a bio-engineered neural interface that appears to be something that you were once developing. Have you seen anything like it, Dr. Aikman?"

I some suit-closet of Aaron's, Kaori is somehow inside, putting two-and-two together. Kaori: "Oh, my God! It's you..." She then turns to see TSM walking towards her. TSM: "Dr. Ikegami, where is is Hannah?" Kaori: "Not here. She's--She's gone." He gets down on her knees before him. Kaori: "Don't hurt her, Aaron. Please--don't hurt me for what I've done." TSM: "Kaori, stop." He then hold the clear bag with the device inside to her face. TSM: "What is the meaning of this? Who is Naamurah? Where is your daughter? Where is Hannah?!" Kaori inspects the contents of the bag. Kaori: "Yes...you deserve to know the truth..." A flashback starts, showing Kaori working in a high-tech lab on Hannah, who appears on a diagonal metal bed, connected to tube and such. Kaori (narrating): "Years ago, when you told me I had to let Hannah go, that's when I decided to leave. I hated you for it. It was like you didn't care." She's now shown holding a syringe before Hannah, looking desperate. Kaori: "Without you, I was consumed with curing Hannah..." We now see a close-up of Hannah, in the Naamurah suit. Kaori: "Until the night I succeeded. I woke Hannah." Kaori is turning a nearby knob, saying, in flashback: "Please work. Please come back to me, my love." We get a close-up of Hannah's eyes as she comes back to life. Kaori (back outside flashback): "I brought my daughter back from years of brain death." Kaori (to Hannah in flashback): "Hannah, it's me, it's Mom. Can you hear me?" Hannah (weakly): "...Mo-Mommy? Wha-at what happened?" Kaori (in flashback): "Oh, Hannah, I can't believe this. It's you. I've missed you so much." Hannah walks down off of the bed, looking down at herself. Hannah: "I h-had a bad dream. I was in a--in--dark. A dark world." Kaori (flashback): "It's over now, my love. It was just a dream. Everything is okay now." Hannah (turning to Kaori): "In that world of darkness, there was a door...Mommy--Mommy, who is that?" She sees something that isn't there, and begins to cry: "It's you--no--you can't be here. Leave me alone! You're just a dream!" Kaori (flashback): "Hannah? Who--there is no one else here." Hannah: "Don't. I'm awake now. Please don't. Please don't do..." Kaori (flashback): "Hannah?" Looking very concerned: "Hannah?" Hannah falls over, and Kaori catches her. Kaori (flashback): "Hannah! Hannah! Wake up! Please don't leave me again!" She hugs her. Kaori (flashback): "Please..." Hannah's eyes then open with bright lights eminating from them. Hannah (voice distorted): "...It's okay...Mommy." Flashback ends, and Kaori continues to TSM: "The years of sorrow and guilt had worn my soul thin. I was stripped away... When Hannah began telling me what to do, I did it. What she wanted was all that mattered. But I see now that it isn't Hannah. It never was Hannah. Was it?" TSM: "It was Naamurah... Kaori, what did she tell you to do?" Kaori: "She had me build more walking machines...for the people she took. Are you going to hurt her, Aaron?" TSM: "How many? Where are they, Kaori?" Kaori: "All of them." We can now see a ton of victims, now in similar Naamurah machine-attire, running along building rooftops. Kaori: "The victims. They're all out there...kidnapping more for...the next wave." TSM then begins to run off. TSM (whispering): "My God." Kaori: "I realize you were right...Hanna is dead." TSM (mentally as he hurries on): "I'm too late. Over a hundred of those monsters are out there. It's some kind of invasion from another dimension. A dimension accessible in the realm of the deep subconscious. I've been so blind. Could I have ever helped--kept things from coming to this?" Words from Daarroh TSM remembers: "You're the one who has let the spider inside." TSM (mentally): "Now I have to stop her. I'm the only one who can." Words from Naamurah TSM remembers: "I came thorugh the door in the dark." TSM approcahes the end of a hallway, where a shadowy image can be seen in the doorway at the end. Daarroh's line TSM recalls now: "In the corridor between our worlds, there is...death comes for you, Spider-Man." TSM stops abruptly before the doorway, shocked to see the character we know as Morlun standing there. TSM: "Who are you?" Morlun: "The end of your story." The final shot is of the other victims running about in their mechanical-suits, with Naamurah nearby. Daarroh's words are repeated: "You can't be their hero, little Spider-Man. Mankind is doomed."

No 2099 references again, but still, another good story. And this Spider-Man isn't that bad; I just wish I knoew the exact time and place of his story. Marvel Wikia says it's an alternate Earth, and seems to suggest this takes place in Japan somewhere. "Ikegami" is also said to be a Japanese-related word for various people & things, occording to wikipedia. And how are Naamurah, Daarroh, etc. related to Karn and the others from before?

I promise to do my best at reading/reviewing S-Man Vol. 2 #4, EoSV #4 (of 5), and UA #25 when they come out tomorrow. Travesty, if you could LMK again if UA has 2099 references in it or not, that'd be great.

Question I looked up on google: Will Ash Vs. Evil Dead be continued as a cartoon?

"In an interview with Collider during San Diego Comic-Con, genre entertainment icon Bruce Campbell confirmed that the powers that be are in conversation to continue his character's demon-busting adventures in a new animated series version of Ash vs. Evil Dead. 'You can do the future a lot easier in animation.'"
