Axis Hobgoblin 002 (of3)

9.0/10 Infinite Comix - Thomas Crawford
Axis: Hobgoblin is a hilarious, inspired take on a Spider-Man villain most readers probably don't give a second thought about. Emmy-nominated Robot Chicken writer Kevin Shinick dug deep to find some of the characters we see in this issue, and all of it is beautifully drawn by Javier Rodriguez. Whether following the main Axis event or not, fans of good comics should be goblin this series up.

    8.8/10 IGN - Jesse Schedeen
The best thing that can be said about this AXIS tie-in is that it channels the same vibe as Superior Foes of Spider-Man. Kevin Shinick weaves a fun, goofy little tale about Roderick Kingsley trying to shift his franchising empire towards good and Phil Urich bristling at this perversion of Hobgoblin's bad name. The first issue's problems with exposition have been smoothed out, resulting in a more cohesive overall story.

However, this mini is NOT doing it for me. The premise of the public and police so readily embracing and catering to an Inverted Hobgoblin is just not believable - especially with this plot device being so rushed along. Also, there's leary promise that there can be satisfying wrap up next and final issue of this trilogy.

Goblin Knight(Phil Urich) is treated like a buffoon and jobs shamefully with his showings. The Hobgoblin/Goblin Knight clash was more of a show off than a stand off. Even the homage to how Osborn was killed the first time by Goblin-Glider was not impressive.

Hypno-Hustler may or may not be the real McCoy in the Hostess Fruit Pie-esque campy clash.

Tinkerer may or may not have been busted by Hobgoblin. THIS Hostess Fruit Pie-esque parody clash seeemed like just a manufactured fun page for/from Hobby's new book.

QUEEN CAT is introduced. She is Lily(who used to be Menace before showing up powerless last issue) now brainwashed(you might say mindwiped ;\) ) into forgetting her past. She was the only interesting character this issue. The details of her makeover should be intriguing. Goblin Knight's renewed interest in his connection to her could be an interesting story seed.

As for all the other bad guys, that appear, we can assume they are ALL just new people joining the Hobby Program...

Missile Mate: From silly sidekick to tenuous turncoat.

Hockey-grrl: Meh.

Bluejacket-grrl: Meh.

Water Wizard: Seems to have (hopefully, only) water gauntlets.

Leather Boy: Stated to be new successor (to the GLA fallen member) and is only there for the one gag - figuratively AND literally.

C-Listers: They are the last page traitors(& OHOTMU-successors) and each costumed choice provided the most eye-raising, mildly-curious, character moment(save those of Lil and Phil) after 20 pages. They also beg the question: how long before the likes of the REAL 8-ball, Tiger Shark, Unicorn, Melter, Squid, or Killer Shrike actually go after the Copycatting Hobby?
