Having just put this book down, some quick thoughts and an attempt to divine some sense from the chaos...

Tasked with the challenging task of how to straighten out the now tangled, distorted, and battered story of Superman, and how to set the last six years into some sort of perspective, Dan Jurgens deserves some praise in developing and seeing through a largely successful master-plan on how to restore some integrity to the Man of Steel and at the same time reassure the long suffering readership all will be well by delivering to them a convincing and entirely fitting tribute to the enduring allure and strength of character of the Superman we were first introduced to back in 1986 - here, in a muddled yet thrilling finale to the Superman Reborn storyline, Jurgens succeeds in not only straightening out and reconciling continuity since that very debut year but reaffirms just how powerful and important a force the Superman dynasty is to not only the world, but the very fabric of the Universe itself...

Echoing threads set up over the last year, and in particular Peter Thomasi's Multiversity story, the question of identity that has haunted the characters of Clark and Lois since their return in Convergence' are duly rendered null and void thanks to some deeply inexplicable wish fulfilment from Jon Kent and much like the last three chapters to the story It's all done in a slapdash fashion where "stuff happens", all plotting is very far from anything approaching perfect. So yes, fundamental Questions remain unanswered, conceptual problems are ignored and waved away, Mr Mxyzptlk exits to the left and is never seen again, but where Action Comics does succeed, and therefore manages an equilibrium, is in the attention to demonstrating fine character that has powered this Superman and Lois along for three decades. And the promise that as a force for good in the world Superman can potentially not only change the nature of people around him but if the need arises can be a challenge for the almighty of the Universe itself. As even the ever watching Mr Oz shows an unprecedented display of awe at what unfolds before him the power of a being, the worlds greatest hero, to take a warped and damaged reality and bend it back into its rightful state is matched in spectacle by the power and bond of family. Superman has evolved; and we have grown with him. Some of us were there at the start in 1986. But what a journey it has been to here, a new age dawns with Action #976 - what are your thoughts? \:\)
