Am I alone here!? Lol

Don't get me wrong, there things about and decisions made by Aaron that frustrated me, but I think God Butcher and his final story King Thor are masterpieces as comics go.

And Donny Cates, his first six issues are exploding my brain with thunderous delight. It's like that movie Mandy if it was a Thor comic! For me it hits all the right notes, and while I understand the criticism, none of it really resonates with me. It all feels a bit arbitrary to me. Seems like judging this Thor run according to a kind of preconceived set of limited power levels that I'm less interested in personally.

Anyway, I was just curious does, did anyone else out there enjoy Aaron's stuff that also likes Cates? Anyone else still like Thor comics?

cheers,

In your opinion, what were the most well-written aspects of this storyline?

As for Aaron, I was one of the few posters who went to bat for Aaron early on, debating the most conservative members on this forum that Aaron should be given a chance.

In the end, I was deeply disappointed by Aaron.

*shrugs*

With Aaron he started off well. Then unworthy which went on for far too long. The King Thor stuff was OK. Generally his characterisation of Thor and weakening of him was a slap in the face for me as a Thor fan. The portrayal in avengers even now isn't great.

I LOATHE Ass Clown Aaron's trash heap of a Thor run (which he is continuing in Avengers). Now, his s@%# is going to infect the MCU.

Cates is off to a decent start. After Aaron's "bait and switch" that he pulled with Thor fans after Fraction's run, I was cautiously optimistic when Cates started, but that apprehension is slowly melting away and I am looking forward to Thor and Knull throwing down.

While I respect your opinion sir, and the God Butcher arc was pretty good, Aaron then obliterated all goodwill with what felt like a decades long run where he didnt deconstruct our boy, he assassinated his character. And it surrounded that assassination with just plain bad writing IMHO.

I dont care if Cates isnt the best writer, its clear he likes the character. Which is 1000 times better than what we had.

Quite possibly.

If you liked Aaron's run then I would have to question why the hell you ever liked Thor in the first place because that run is basically 'Anti-Thor'?

God Butcher was very good, but horribly decompressed. The final story did nothing to atone for all those stories in between.

Given you already stated you liked Aaron's run you are clearly no fan of continuity, logic or history - so I can understand why you would also like Cates since he has the exact same writing traits.

Aaron hated Thor and everything he stood for - hence his horrible deconstruction of the character.

Cates (so far) seems like a battle board fanboy.

I'll take the latter over the former any day but it would be good to get a decent story for once.

I really liked Aaron's first God Butcher story and he had some interesting ideas after that like War of the Realms and the future Galactus and Ego the Living Planet. I could even go along with the Mjolnir retcon and Jane Thor did have her moments. But overall his execution got worse and worse. Ultimately, his tenure didn't work for me.

Aaron and Cates suffer from similar problems. Neither really care about established power levels or continuity all that much. I'm okay with authors breaking those if what replaces them works, but what they wrote didn't work for me, again not so much the plot ideas, but the execution. The Black Winter coming for Galactus with Thor intervening could be a great idea if executed properly. But under Aaron and Cates, characters just don't act like the characters we know, and the way they did act didn't make them more interesting. Fictional worlds need rules. If anything goes, then that's bad writing because anything you write is not measured against anything else. With no rules, you can literally write anything and get away with it. I don't feel like Aaron or Cates have any rules.

I think they and most creators at Marvel/D.C. have a mandate to use both their story and company wide view. My guess is that starts at the top down to editing. Whether that is a good thing depends on what point of view we subjectively see as a finished product.
I would not close the book on the Black Winter/Galactus plot line. There are still unanswered questions to be resolved. Galactus behavior like attacking Thor after empowering him. The true nature of the BW and if it or Galactus are truly dead. We know Galen will return and fairly soon. There is treachery/conniving yet to be seen. Kind of sounds like Aaron with the Gorr story. That is a bit unsettling but I hope Cates does not go too far in that direction.
I feel Cates did well in the setting up what we have seen so far though all is not played out. Power wise it is good to see Thor being the one kicking butt for a change. Aaron continues to use him as a chump in Valkyrie and Avengers on a monthly basis.
