What issue/circumstances was this? It's hard to accept when young Jean scans Old Scott's mind she will sift thru it to specific tender moments unless the plot device calls for this particular scene but it can be fun, at times, to debate how such uncanny telepathic readings should work in the MU.

I believe it could be from the 1991 X-men series, either 5,6 or 7.

Despite simultaneous issue releases, X-men was running ahead of Uncanny chronologically at that moment. Storm's Gold team was preparing to go to the hellfire club to meet Emma Frost and watch the Hellions get massacred by Fitzroy and for Jean to get "killed" for one issue(281-282).

Just now had a chance to read a couple of X-Men The Hidden Years books and noticed that original, Original Jean sort of went a similar transformation as NOW, Young Jean did last month at the end of The Trial of Jean Grey. Maybe it will prove to be an identical transformation. Both implied power on par with that of The Phoenix Force but neither temporally positioned Jean had met the Dark Phoenix yet. My questions:

1. Did Beast go back in time for the time to bring Young Jean to the present before the Hidden Years maxi series or after it? It's probably before which is somewhat curious to consider if there will be a connection ever established between the 2 non-Phoenix power-ups presuming Hidden Years is considered to be canon by all the Bullpenners cross the board.

2. Has this Hidden Years' transformation of Jean -or any of the events of the maxi series for that matter- ever been referenced or footnoted in m/any mainstream X-books -or any MU back issues for that matter? This issue of the Hidden Years cashing in on all things Phoenix surprised me almost as much as Storm showing up and meeting the Originals a couple issues earlier. Same question: did Ro or any X-folk ever mention this earliest -not to mention topless- encounter?

Long before. The Hidden Years takes place during the time the X-Men series was running reprints (X-Men v1 #67-93). The current teens come from circa X-Men v1 #8, nearly the beginning of their careers.

Not that I recall. It's kind of like Byrne's other project of that time (with Roger Stern): Marvel Lost Generation.
