Subj: Some weird questions about the last few issues of Uncanny X-Men (Spoilers)

Over the last month I decided to start reading a few new Marvel titles for the first time in roughly 4 or 5 years. It's good seeing the old characters again, but I have a few questions.

What I don't understand is this. Are the Marvel books each in their own pocket universe now? In X-Men, the mutants are more persecuted than ever, whereas in Captain America, Hydra basically took over the whole world and now things are returning to normal, but everyone hates Captain America. Is this all happening in the same Marvel Universe still? I haven't seen/heard any reference to the Hydra takeover in X-Men. One would think that mutants, too, would have been pardoned by the government if they fought against Hydra like so many supervillains did.

Do old events in Marvel Comics still stand, or has there been a reboot of sorts? The reason I ask is because Havok is in the X-Men, and he used to be the leader of X-Factor. Madrox and Rahne are in the X-Men with Havok, and there's no mention of their past together as X-Factor. It would have to be strange for them not to look at him as their leader. It was also strange for Alex to kill one of Madrox's duplicates and not have it be a problem after that. There wasn't even an apology from Havok.

Another few things made no sense to me. In the oversized issue, there is a scene where young Cable has a sniper rifle aimed at Cyclops. Wolverine interrupts and Cable assures him he was trying to save Cyclops, not kill him. The scene didn't make any sense. Anybody know anything about this? Why would pointing a rifle at Cyclops save him?

Also, Cyclops and Wolverine more or less kill a bunch of guys in that issue, when Cyclops is jumped outside the ruins of the school. A couple of issues later Cyclops writes this list of people they've fought. Wolverine refers to it as a "kill list." Cyclops tells him that's now how they do things. Huh? Didn't he just off a bunch of guys a couple of issues before that?

Also, is Strong Guy really dead? That seemed like a real throwaway death for a somewhat major character. And what's the point in having Mirage and Karma on the team? They haven't done anything and only get a word or two in each issue. I'd argue that Magik is useless as well, but at least she can teleport the team.

I'd like to add that in spite of the way this post sounds, I am enjoying reading the book again. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't be speculating about the events. I'd probably throw them out and stop buying again.
