Maybe I'm wrong in how I see it because it has been years since I've read the issues but I saw Gilgamesh as rightfully confident rather than brash. He was confident because he had been able to back it up for centuries. He respected leadership but he was always his own man and had been good at doing what he does for a long time.
I felt like Byrne (I think it was him) went out of his way to humble Gil and make him look stupid. Then Gil just sort of became that quaint off color footnote in Avengers history like say Chemical King was for the Legion of Heroes or Mimic was for the X-Men.
I was always a little disappointed he didn't become better friends with Thor and Herc.
