Infamous is right. Until this issue, Byrne could do no wrong in my eyes. But I was disgusted at what he did to the Vision.

What bothered me the most is the disregard for the heaps of continuity that showed the Vision as a being of (synthetic) tissue, bone and blood. He was NEVER a mechanical robot until Byrne showed him dismantled on that table. Heck, there was a whole issue of Ant Man traveling through the interior of Vision's body, and I promise you it wasn't gears and circuitry.

Yup! It is impossible for me to argue this point. What happened to the Vision, specifically, was horrendous & unbearable -now&then- but in general (do-no-wrong-80s-Byrne) comics were so good back then.

And to be fair -for shock value- that ending was pretty effective and certainly had me standing by the spinner rack at the cornerstore for #44. Vizh definitely had a predominantly synthetic makeup - clearly seen from that example you cite and shown some here http://www.supermegamonkey.net/chronocomic/entries/avengers_8997.shtml but isn't it also possible that there was more 'android' parts to the synthezoid than we saw during that Kree/Skrull War ish? NOT that this Editorial okayed direction deserved/deserves a No-Prize out - was it ever addressed in-story subsequently at any point?

This would also raise the question of how much work did Ultron actually do on Vision if he was originally a temporal copy of Jim Hammond who should or should not have mechanics given his high temperature tolerance and currently known Golden Age origin.
