My guess is the crippling anxiety results from some previously unrevealed trauma. They could be trying to be relevant by piling on the #MeToo movement. If so, they chose EXACTLY THE WRONG CHARACTER, since she has already been raped/impregnated/gave birth/was raped again by her son-lover. The last thing she needs is more baggage.

        Seriously, what a mess.

You may be right that this is a #MeToo thing. I haven't read nearly enough of Carol's stories to have a reliable opinion, but it could be true that Marvel uses her to represent whatever the feminist movement is currently up to.

Quite different from Wonder Woman, who, for example, would never be the victim of rape. DC's Marketing Department would never allow it, a stance for which I applaud them. I'd like to say that She-Hulk, Namora, or Thundra would never be raped, for marketing reasons if nothing else, but I fear Marvel would let me down on that. Other Marvel super-heroines who are less obviously Amazonian are even less likely to be immune to sexual assault. But Carol, who ought to be the most Amazonian of all, is instead the most vulnerable if my guess as to what she represents is accurate, since modern feminism never tires of discussing sexual assault.

I don't think Namora would be important enough to spare. (and I kinda think she might have been forced to be with her cousin Byrrah after Llyra killed her husband Talan)
