The Phoenix revived him (via trickery) in the AvX event years back, and he gave the phoenix its energies back to save the Kree.

Yet his Cosmic Awareness and Zen-level of inner peace and control would make him ideal to host the Phoenix. The Phoenix could have revived him again, fried the cancer out of him and merged with him.

That should have been their end story!
