The Killing Joke is definitely a classic.
Batman DOES NOT kill the Joker at the ending. He promised Gordon that he would take him in to prove that "our way works." Remember that Joker had just crippled Barbara, stripped her, and forced Gordon to look at those pictures to drive him insane.
In the end, Joker tells Batman a joke about two inmates escaping an asylum with the aide of a flashlight. Both Batman and Joker burst out laughing as the police sirens draw closer.
