Let's see just how many Priest fans, and how many people who don't like this run there are out there, and care enough to try and bring about change.

Even before this, Marvel had a "get out of jail free" card by establishing that dimensional rifts created by Genis-Vell were the reasons for the continuity contradictions.

Heck, even before that Marvel had several "get out jail cards free" up their leaves. They have devices that can alter reality thus bringing back dead characters, they have time travel that can alter reality or just plain erase realities, they have cosmic beings that can do just about anything, they have the old "Those events did not happen in this reality but another reality excuse.", they have mutants that can change realities, they have doppelgangers from alternate realities, clones replacing the traditional hero, cosmic rifts and all sorts of other ways to erase events in the Marvel Universe.
