But how will they see him stand out as a character if don't read the book at all? I mean, the people drawn to the crossover would not read the book at all if not for the crossover and thus would not be able to see what makes the character stand out.

I wasn't talking about the need for crossovers, rather their seeming inability to retain readers for this series. It's a two step process, ideally.
