I don't think we need a new #1. I personally loves long-running series, so I think it's a shame that nowadays titles are re-started with a new #1 (see Runaways as a perfect example, there is now a third #1)
> Why not just start up again with 42? It's not like a new #1 means anything nowadays, what with books being restarted all the time!

Still a #1 sells more than a #42, so for a marketing point of view a #1 is a better way to sell a book, than a #42. Again I think it's a shame and have lot more respect for a title such as Detective Comics or Action Comics both have runs way over 800.
> The fact of the matter is, BLACK PANTHER should be on issue #103, AVENGERS should be over 500, etc.

Back in the days (late 60's/early 70's?) a series like Green Lantern was cancelled and when the title returned a few years later it wasn't as a new #1, it was as a #92 (or so). Back then a high number meant that a series had stood the test of time, even if it had been cancelled. Nowadays a series is cancelled in one month and the next re-started as a new #1
